i teach a class on luxury branding and we had a heated discussion about whether nike was a luxury brand. i'd say they are in their space.

I can agree with that. Considering Nike isn't technically the best when it comes to performance shoes, maybe outside of basketball, and the fact that they dominate the collectors world when it comes to shoes (not to mention the increasing price point of each pair), I am not sure there are any other brands out there like Nike. They have made sneakers meant to be worn for sports to a pair that can be worn casually thus multiplying their sales, well maybe the influence came from the players, artists, DJs, etc.. of the 80's but Nike has been in the forefront of that movement.

It has also become some sort of indulgence to own more pairs than you need, maybe not exactly in this forum but there are millions out there, including myself.

I'd love to be in that class. I had a heated debate with a girl who was in management with J. Crew about the same principle when I was in biz school.

Dang, Kunk the teacher shows up in RO gear to scare the students on the first day? foo.gificon_gu_b_slayer[1].gif

^ Not a fan of the Dynamic Flywire Roshes. I wish they'd stick to simple/original designs.

Knowing Nike, they'll milk it for all it's worth.

I saw some Roshes with marbled midsole now.

I'm sure sooner or later, the Flyknit will make it onto basketball shoes too.

Roshes were made to be worn casually, I don't know how some folks can wear them to run and play sports in.

Oh yeah, for Nike stuff...shoes and apparel, if it malfunctions somehow, ie air bubble just pops, you can contact Nike and inform them about it. If the product is within a year or two (maybe three, I can't recall for sure), they will allow you to send the item in to be inspected. If they deem it defective, they will give you a giftcard for the retail price that you can use on their site.

I did this a couple of times in high school with my shoes when I used to abuse them during PE and such. Air bubble would popped prematurely and some woven panel would be coming undone.

this isn't really a testament to nike quality (we suck, so when we fail, just give a shout)

as it were, think the roshes are more gimmick than reality, so not too surprised at faulty quality

Roshe is a strictly casual pair of shoes so I do not know how you can say it is a gimmick?

you're asking how one of the most hyped pair of shoes in the recent past could be a gimmick?

not (entirely) suggesting nike is to blame, but I've personally never understood the appeal...they're mostly ugly
