don't squat / deadlift in running shoes, it is bad. you will ruin your spine (amongst other things)

This is a bit of a hyperbole.

Frees would be fine anyway, sole is flat an doesn't compress.

fuji, does anyone make like a foot cover or some shit for squatting? I dont want to go barefoot or squat in my socks at the gym so it'd be cool if I could slip something over my socks kinda like a galoshe for my feet (0)

if only they made shoes that mimicked being barefoot

You can buy deadlift slippers, which are pretty much just a bit of rubber. They do look quite a bit like galoushes.

Never used them personally, olympic lifting shoes erryday.

If you want flat shoes for the heavy lifts, chucks aren't bad. They're flat and stable.
