This is just a fantastic lower price option. It is difficult to buy something in your range that is both liquid and retains or appreciates in value. I understand you don't plan on selling it, but plans can change and I would rather be long a watch I can get rid of if I want to do something different.

I paid $150 for this.

paid $225 for this.

Just another consideration, my personal favorite in your stated range would be a Roadster or an Omega. Peace.

Very nice indeed! Do you know if they have the original movements inside them? And how recent was this?

I bought both in the last 6 months, the internals were original, I sold both for about 600 each, FYI. They both looked like absolute hell when I bought them, just did a good cleaning and replaced the bands.

There's another great option for someone in your position which was just released this month:

Cartier Tank Solo Automatic. The Solo has been around almost a decade but this is the first time a self-winding version has been added to the lineup. The nice thing about this one is that it retails for about $3,500 in steel on either a leather strap or bracelet; roughly $2k less than a comparable Santos or Tank Francaise. While I don't consider Cartier the epitome of watchmaking, this is, in my opinion, a very well-priced, suitable option. There is also a round version of the Solo, which has also recently been released as an automatic, though it is significantly larger.
