Smart man. With interest rates as low as 1.49% for auto loans @ top credit scores, you'd be foolish to pay cash for a car. This is all assuming you're investing your own cash to generate excess returns smile.gif.

I owned the 2011 GTI.  It was a fantastic car.  Needed no repairs in the 18 months I owned before I had to sell for relocation.  I would have gladly kept it.

Sporty.  DSG transmission was fantastic.  In the past few years I've owned Audi B5 A4, E39 540i, Honda AP2 S2000, and now Merc W204 C220 Cdi, and the GTi is as enjoyable as any of them.  I'm also not biased against Hyundais, having owned a Scoupe Turbo back in the day, but the GTi is truly the best all around car a manufacturer can produce.

If you really want a reliable car with a great warranty there's always a corolla ;)

If you're older than 25, maybe 27, the answer is neither

We just picked up a 1995 GTI for my daughter, who will be turning 16 in a few months. It's actually a really fun car to drive and I'm impressed at how solidly built and durable it is. In particular, the seats look almost new and the engine and transmission are solid and strong. Over the last couple of weeks I've found myself grabbing the keys if I need to run a quick errand. I love my E46 ZHP convertible, but the GTI is a fun little car and a tremendous value.

The GTI is also one of the last made in Germany Volkswagens

I think the GTI works rather well with older folk. As long as you get it with the more refined choices (no goofy wheels, no bright colors), it doesn't really have any boy-racer look to it. The 4-door GTI is one of my favorite car models across generations...I'm so glad they made the 4-door available in the US in the recent generations.

My observation on VW maintenance and reliability is that they can be very reliable, but they have tight tolerances and are not forgiving. If you are the kind of person who lets the routine maintenance and oil changes lapse until you are long overdue (or something goes wrong), the VWs will not be happy. If you know that you are the kind of person who stays on top of routine and preventative maintenance, then you will be fine; if not, get an asian car.
