How do I knock off this classic shirt + v-neck sweather look?

Hey all
Sry to make this my first post in here, but I'm trying to duplicate a look, I have already tried to search the forum, but there is just to much info that I have to give up, so I decided to move onto the ice, and just try to ask here:

700

First of all I'm a student, so I can't afford to care about brands, but I would still like to identify the original pieces in the above:
Original:
As far as I can see the sweater is Ralph Lauren.
The shirt and chinos is more irrelevant.

But what watch and belt is this? (
What is the style of the belt and watch called? what is the material?

Knocking it off:
Does anyone have suggestions for other brands, or even replica, that comes close to the above? I would prefer something of decent quality, but brand is irrelevant.

Where to buy?

Does anyone have suggestions to places to shop for it online? (it will have to shop to denmark where I live, soo UK might be best).

I'm looking for both:

- Watch

- Belt
- Sweater (this kind's in mostly grey and black, but also other.)

- Chinos (again, both grey, black but also other)

Guide for how to wear?
I'm sry for the REAL newbie question, but how do he get the effect for the sleeves? how do ones fold it like that? And the same with the belt? (I understand that is totally newbie questions, sry about that).

Hope it's okay to ask this kind of question here, I really appreciates it.

Thnx.

You shouldn't copy someone else's look.

The dress belt presumably is leather or reptile and possibly embossed. It looks to have a slide buckle. Edit: the belt might be http://www.ralphlauren.com/product/index.jsp?productId=1784852&utm_medium=1784852&utm_source=Google_PLA&utm_campaign=CSE and therefore not affordable even in knockoff form.

Frankly, the belt and watch are rather strange and probably not worth buying by someone with little money to spend on a wardrobe.

Don't copy, develop your own ideas. Just visit some shops and see what is there - one of the oldest ways, but still the best.

Much of the shirt/sweater combination, including the fit, might be worth copying. Dark gray or dark blue could be substituted for the black.

I'm sry if I made the thread unclear :)
I'm not going to copy the look exatly(and I don't look anything like the person on that picture either, I have dark brown short hair buzzcut, short sailor beard, and brown eyes, and is a bit more buff than he is - think more like a young russel crowe type), I just like the combo with the v-neck sweather and the shirt, - but obviously I'm not going to directly copy it, - just like I'm still going to buy a grey suit even if Cary Grant whore one in North by Northwest. (I guess I should not have written knock-off in the title) ...

The above look is from a Ralph Lauren commercial(I really love Ralph Lauren for some reason, and also thought about looks alike with the RL polo shorts here at summer, with a navy sports jacket, or the sweather look), so you are properly right with the belt(I just thought that perhaps it was something that matched the watch).

I have an education in web-design and marketing, and is now close to done with studying philosophy, and right now have an internship working with online-marketing, communication and graphich design for a rather big danish company, that might very well become full time when I'm done with my study in a few months.

So that and my social life in general is basically what I'm working hard upgrading my style to(comming from a very non-formal university background, wearing mostly jeans or chino's and converse, with a non tucked slimfit shirt or polo, and a black skin jacket(still a look I'm okay with, but have to step up a little), so I'm ready to step into the next fase here(not the big leauges, just the beginning to a more mature style)...

As for a watch one of the reason why I asked is that my grand pa has decided it's time that I get a real watch or two(I'm not that close to him, since my grandma and him is divorced and I'm close to my grandma, so I grew up rather poor, with my dad being a manual worker, and still is), his grandpa was a watchmaker, and he has collected watches all his life, though so far the only thing he has ever given me was a rolex when I turned 18(great gift at the time), - but now he is talking about giving me one or two of his watches (I only which he thought it was time I got some real cloth also haha ... but what ever, I could sell it for cloth but I won't).

To be honest I don't know that much about watches, but he suggested one of his Jaeger le  Coultre Reverso's I just think that one looked a bit clumsy? :) But it made me think of the look above a little ...

I was personally more thinking about an old Vacheron Constantin he has, I think it's a very beautyfull thin small round watch ...

I perfer something that is a bit discrete, but still decent casul style: I have a few grey and black suits and jackets, but I'm also going to look into sports coats in navy and some kind of tweed perhaps, pocket squares, sperry top-sliders.

But the matching belt will still become a challange ...

Anyways, thnx for the feedback, more is certainly welcome, will pounder some more on this ...

PS: because I live in Denmark, where it's insanely expensive to shop, I'm looking for buying online from the uk, or europe (of course I will go and try it in a shop, before I buy anything) ...

There are many, many online retailers that sell clothing items similar to those from the commercial. Including Topman (cheap but low quality) and Charles Tyrwhitt. H&M (similar to Topman) might have a store near you. Trying on sweaters in person is best.

Yes we have an H&M, and it's cheap, but the quality is not that great? (I have a few tiger of sweden cardigans, and they seam to be in allot better quality) but perhaps the ones from H&M are okay anyways, will try to take a look again... I will figure that part out for sure, but if anyone just happens to know of a certain brand or something that they have on sale online right now, then I would like to hear it anyways :)

But what type of belt should I go for, if it should match a style like the above(and can be used for other things also), and be something I can afford? :/
Perhaps I should just try to search the forum for cheapest acceptable belts, or something ... :/

Thnx.

I don't like the look. For years people have been trying to capture the smart but scruffy look and trying to break the rules, it does my head in.

What rules are that? (not being sarcastic), I thought layering with the v-neck sweather on top of a shirt, was clasic in casual menswear. (I'm still a totally newbie to the style and fashion, but a couple of the books I'm reading about mens style at the moment mention it). :)

I obvious like the look allot, but who knows perhaps that change when I upgrade my taste, so I'm very willing to change my openion if I understand the "why", - untill then De gustibus non est disputandum.

Remember I'm looking into the more casual side of menswear here ...

You're making this more complicated than it needs to be. Just get a slim vneck sweater and a buttondown collared shirt. The belt and watch are not essential to that look.

A JLC Reverso is anything but clumsy. If I were to get a square watch, it would be the first one I would consider. That or a Glashutte Senator 70's (but it isn't really a true square). The JLC Reverso 1931 tribute is perhaps my favorite. Both watches carry a significant pedigree:

If you wish to go the Vacheron Constantin route, you can walk in perhaps an even more exclusive club. In the dress watch category, it would be difficult to beat the Patrimony, but it carries quite the price tag.

If you want to have a square looking watch, but don't want (or aren't able) to shell out the big bucks, you could do worse than try this on for size (I know, it's quartz, but the OP is a student and doesn't have much money):

http://www.orvis.com/store/product.aspx?pf_id=1E8X&dir_id=1686&group_id=1673&cat_id=27731&subcat_id=14340

Orvis have a few others, too. Not bad looking for the (very) price conscious individual.

The rules of clothes are colour, cut and texture.

Where I live there appears to be trend of clean people (you can smell the soap on them so they obvious care about how they look) trying to dress down but spending lots of money on trying to achieve the look e.g. designer jeans with rips in them, wearing any type of shirt hanging outside their jeans/trousers etc. It's the sort of "No mans' land" of clothes. There's nothing wrong with wearing a T shirt and jeans and there's nothing wrong with wearing a suit but personally I would never try to mix clothes. I suppose what I'm saying is that some people just don't know how to put clothes together. That's why websites like this are so valuable, but unfortuantely it looks like most people don't come to places like this to to get dressing tips. I was talking about this to a friend the other night and he said there should be a law against it.  biggrin.gif

Yep, The other night I wore a reddish plum coloured button down shirt, a oxblood/burgundy V neck jumper, Near white chinos and balanced it off with oxblood Dr Martin boots.
