SWD has a thread called "Random Fashion Thoughts," which more or less serves as a general chat room for SWD regulars. I think it's a nice way to build community, and a way to get have conversations that aren't topic-specific. This thread serves that.

Talk about anything you've been thinking related to classic men's style, so long as it doesn't already fit into one of the other discussion threads we have. Examples:

I'm somewhat afraid that MC is too topic-specific driven for this to work, but then I realized that once Stitchy finds this thread, it'll be bumped a few times a day.

Interesting thread idea. Don't know if it will thrive, but I'll throw out a thought I originally had in the peacock thread that didn't really fit in there, and isn't really enough of a topic for a whole thread:

  • Men have traditionally preferred to build an interchangeable wardrobe of pieces that permit an easy range of always-appropriate, more-or-less conservative looks
  • Women have traditionally preferred to build a wardrobe of outfits, able to adapt to changing moods or particular events.

The traditional male approach can still work perfectly well for men today. But because there's less of an official or widely-accepted dress standard, it's possible for men to have fun with the feminine approach too. Because it's more mood-specific, it can allow for a tighter match between event/intent and appearance. The concept/dominance of a traditional masculine wardrobe has faded partly because there's simply less need for that kind of easy interchangeability and more scope for an outfit(?fashion)-based approach.

Agreed Holdfast, it's part of the double edged sword that is "business casual" .

If you're wearing a jacket, let alone an actual suit you're already considered "formally" dressed, rightly or wrongly. This enables us to play with a greater scope of options. No one will care that you wore chestnut double monks instead of black captoes. On the down side, no one will distinguish a great piece you might have vs just another X. Another big plus is that even if you're a walking travesty on SF, you're most likely better dressed than every other shlub in your place of work.

I will, and woe betide you if you ever come into contact with me wearing those monstrosities.

for me it's a matter of design harmony from garment to garment. I have a pretty broad range of styles ('classic' to designer to casual basic) in my wardobe so I can't simply pick any jacket and know it will work with any pant. but within each "group" I guess there are sort of de facto "outfits".. combinations I know work together so I'll repeat them.

The female approach Holdfast describes strikes me as "playing dressup" whereas the male version is "getting dressed". These days most men have few occasions when a jacket is required, much less a suit and tie. So when such an occasion comes along, an outfit is often bought for this event. At that point, they're playing dressup.

Btw I hope this thread doesn't die.

It's kindof a balance.

I think i'd never be happy just picking up the staple items, but on the other hand I need some items to glue everything together. Things like grey pants. Plain toe derbies. etc.

That said, when I buy things I do think of specific outfits to wear them with, and then I'm often pleasantly surprised when they work in other outfits that I hadn't had in mind.

Would I be correct in staying you stick to a fairly narrow colour palette?

I think that helps.

see, the Earth is actually spherical, and it orbits around this massive gassy star that we know of as the sun. The earth also spins on its axis. A direct consequence of this is that at certain points in earth's spin, some parts of the earth are exposed to the sun's rays, and some are not.

Also, there is a divine ability in postgrad students to procrastinate.

At least when you guys lose your employment, you'll know the correct ways to wear a white shirt.
