I've washed cotton, ripstop, nylon tassan, cotton/linen Bedfords, and all have come out fine
I just put in on a standard 30 degree wash, and let them dry flat (rather than tumble-dry)

Definitely below the knee, but a bit bigger above as well. I've only tried on the corduroy, not sure if other materials differ.
