I still think it's a good rule of thumb, but not a commandment.

Though this may need to wait a few months. Or I can just say seasonality be damned. I've already done it once.

I guess I do think of that as something that works better in the summer.

I don't really see how tan/brown with white is an "advanced move," as Manton states in the OP. Like, you got a brown suit or jacket? Put on a white shirt and a navy or black knit tie. There's no step three. A "real" tie choice? Then I can understand it requiring some thought.

For instance...this is from the summer. I can't remember what shoes I wore but I doubt they were black:

I think the vast majority (at least what I could think of) involve lighter color jackets where blue either wouldn't create enough contrast or would end up being darker than the jacket.

On the above, are you wearing braces or a belt? I guess it doesn't matter much if the belt was brown and the tie black as a DB is rarely unbuttoned.

I think white is the optimum choice here (and black shoes would clearly not work):

I was wearing braces.

As I'm sure I said back when this thread was originally hopping, a mid-brown or tan suit with a white shirt and black tie is a fantastic combo. Blue shirt doesn't even come close to it in the context. ubr's example above makes this point very well.

What's your footwear choice in this case, sweet tits?
Am I sweet tits? If so, for your fit I would have gone with dark brown or black shoes. Black captoe blucher or not-too-heavily-brogued wingtip; or sleek, dark brown chukka.

I might give that a try this summer. So dark brown shoes then? Would you do a grenadine or knit black tie?
Either would be fine for me, but the grenadine would be a bit dressier.

How about navy instead of black? I'm personally not a fan of the brown-black "mismatch".

With navy, you'd be better off in a light blue shirt (which isn't to say it wouldn't look fine)
