This brings up a question I am curious about: what is a good summer tie? I have a few cotton ones, but I'm not sure anyone would even notice they were cotton outside of 5 ft. Are there certain patterns that are summery ( there seem to be a lot of plaid cotton ties) or is it more about the material?

^ My best suggestion is stick to linen or silk tussah in solids but with some variegated weave -- blues, tans, browns, etc. Patterns usually look too contrived and tableclothey.
 

Edit: some linen patterns used in jacketings (micro houndstooth, small glen check) can be repurposed for this as well.

 

And 100% cotton is generally a pain in the ass to tie and feels gross.
