I often wonder the same. Purely from a comfort perspective--wouldn't your feet and shoes get all sweaty and gross? There is a reason why socks were invented.

Please, Manton. Everybody knows socks are contrived affectations.

that is my feeling. i think i maybe tried it once in a really casual fit, and found it was extremely uncomfortable.

Good question. Maybe they ran out of money when putting together their wardrobes before getting to socks.

That's new. Socks in the summer, if you're wearing loafers or espadrilles, aren't optional?

You sure that their asking about your socklessness in a sweaty summer wasn't a proxy for the smell? JK

More to the point, in Summer, I do wear boat shoes -- more penny loafers, and car shoes, both without socks. So it's not that uncommon to wear the aforementioned without socks (Bucks sans socks would strike me as a little queer, however) -- well, unless you're in the city of London, and bounded by the gentlemen's haberdashers (St James, Jermyn Street, Clifford Street etc), in which case, even penny loafers might look untraditional among most English gentlemen. Not that anybody would stop and ask you about them of course.

When you're about the Row and see a gentleman in a navy blazer with khakis and penny loafers, I wait for the familiar American accent.

Definitely. Casual shoes like topsiders are clearly in a different category. I wear topsiders all summer as well, without socks. But they are made to be worn so--they breath enough to not sweat badly, and have an insole that is designed to be sweated in. Also, the whole shoe is really designed to get wet. Furthermore, they are basically disposable--they get all gross after a couple of years, and you throw them away and get a new pair.

I'm not 100% sure this pocket square works. Any advice would be appreciated.

I wear no show socks in the summer.

I should also mention that I get constant ridicule in the office about it too. As I should.

Worked on the Hill for a while and one day hazarded "no socks" to work (on a sweltering Friday).

Chief of Staff for the guy I worked for grabbed me by the arm and said in his syrupy Southern drawl: "Sonny, this ain't a countreh cluuub. I'mma need ya to go find some socks."

Last time I went sockless to any gig after that, ever.

With Tod's driving shoes on a weekend, though, I'm strictly sockless - feel great.

can one sporting a suit sans socks ever be considered to be in good taste? i can't think of a single instance where no show socks / sockless is ever the optimal choice.
