no, I don't recognized that. I wear them with, gasp, light grey large scale plaid jackets. I would choose them over light grey pants with certain shades of brown or green jackets.

I agree that I don't really find dark gray pents (can't believe I just wrote that word) attractive at all. When it comes to the lower half being dark, it's jeans or dark brown for me 95% of the time.

My sportcoats and sweaters lean towards the more casual / rustic side so dark gray suddenly adds an awkward formality which is something I often see when gray pents (can't believe I did it again) are posted here, there and everywhere (I love The Beatles).

I do have a pair of medium - dark gray wide wale cords that I like a lot, but cords are a different animal.

This is absolutely correct.

 

Try this: (not charcoal) dark gray pants with a rich navy sweater and a light colored shirt (blue, stripes optional). Works even better with flannels because there is some striation to the color. In the interest of defining our terms, here's something more empirical because I happen to have the swatch cards in front of me. I don't know what range you consider dark gray. Compare Fox Brothers CBT5 A285 to FS405 A2069; the former is charcoal, the latter dark gray veering towards mid gray. I don't think that a color one stop between these two would be terrible at all. Certainly not for a holistic outfit but for those days when you want to be quiet and bland. I suspect you would rather reach for a suit but that is not always my idea.

Perhaps it's because I'm looking at these two under artificial lighting, but both those Fox fabrics look awfully close to each other. FS405 is a hair lighter, but not by much.

The point though really isn't where charcoal starts and ends. I think the point is - the darker the grey, the harder it is to wear. I'm with the no-dark-grey-pants crowd. I think they only go with light grey jackets and sometimes a certain kind of light to mid-brown. But the number of jackets that works is very limited, and shouldn't be in a small wardrobe.

When people say mid-grey, I think of Fox FS625 A1290. Going darker from there seems like you're inching your way towards charcoal.

Maybe it's because it's worsted, but that one actually looks even darker to me crazy.gif

I guess it's a good baseline.

Which one? FS625 A1290/22 looks like a light to mid gray to me. FS625 A1290/33 looks closer to charcoal. Mid gray is closer to CBT5 A1285/22.
