Easiest way to remember is the weft goes left (wefts are also called filling yarns). So in a chambray the vertical yarns will be colored and the horizontal white.

If you get a loupe you can see which way the fibers are going. One of the threads runs vertically and the weft passes over and under them. Now if it is a basket weave (2 wefts over/under 2 warps) then it is not chambray or end on end. Then it will either be pinpoint, oxford, or oxford chambray. There isn't a whole lot of rhyme to how these fabrics are named so it's best to identify them by the type of weave, plain, basket, twill, or some kind of jacquard and then by what color the threads are.
