Unbel@421: the prohibition against suede in summer is a real rule, not one I made up. I violate it sometimes, but only with shoes lighter than the ones you posted. @430: pretty bad. Washed out all around, shirt and jacket don’t work, Not sure what WOULD work with that jacket, white I guess (see white shirt thread though) or a blue that is a little more vivid (but not darker. Tie color is just bad.

o/o: those don’t bother me much (I think the flower is too large and I hate the safety pin), the second one is really nice. What I dislike is, a jacket has a rust check and so the guy thinks “Gotta wear a rust tie!” Re: 427, horrible.

It certainly works better than OD/OT's attempt. I think there are several reasons.

1. U.'s tie is not very saturated in color to begin with, though it is bright. It is also quite matte. So, it's not nearly as obnoxious. In fact, I would call it simply a nice pink tie.
2. U.'s pocket square matches his outfit and does not war with his tie.
3. Generally, U. did a better job of matching patterns.
4. U.'s colors are more season appropriate. OD/OT looks to be wearing a heavy flannel suit with chalk stripes. It's very distinctly a cold weather get-up. Yet, the tie and square colors could only ever be conceivably okay in the summer. During an Easter egg hunt. If you're the Easter bunny.

So white bucks are just illegal in and of themselves? I own none personally, just curious. I've tried a white shirt with that jacket before, I didn't like it. But then I like it with the light blue so...shog[1].gif

Really? Obviously, white bucks must be excluded from the rule, but I would assume tan suede (e.g., dirty bucks) would be also. I wear both of those in summer and didn't think I was being even a little transgressive.

I don't understand Manton's decree against suede shoes in summer either. I counter-decree that they're fine--particularly in lighter colors and in more casual styles.

Bucks are the exception. I don't know why this is or where it came from, suppose from the idea that suede is contrified and goes with tweed, and let's face it, it is substantial and hairy and does not work well with summer fabrics and colors. This was a rule I learned when I was rebuked over it a few times many years ago. I also know that I have read it but I can't remember where, maybe in Hardy Amies? I don't think it's in Flusser.

BTW, for tan bucks to be OK in summer, they have to have brick red rubber soles. White shoes are fine for summer even with a more traditional leather sole. I think I made this one up but it makes sense to me.

When the PoW visited the US in 1924 and supposedly brought the suede shoe to America, it was for the International Polo Matches, which I assume must have been during the summer.
