CaymanS, I love your avatar and the fact that I can, for once, say that to someone and not have it said to me. wink.gif

Come on. That's basic.

The negation of Always A
is Not Always A
it's not Always Not A

Or in this case,
Your contention is that matching socks are wrong
Manton's contention is that matching socks are not wrong
He's not contenting that matching socks are always right

The argument then is that matching socks are not wrong because
1. (implicitly) they look fine
2. it's convention / people expect it

Convention is invoked here not as an authority on what is best but rather as an indication of what people expect to see (and therefore would not react negatively to).

I don't think you can seriously doubt that everyone (but foo.gif) is completely unfazed by matching socks.

You'd then be left having to make an argument for why it always looks bad

The two you offered--
- you don't match your shirt and shirt = socks (in this case) so you shouldn't match your socks.
- people who match their socks read AAAC, generally suck

Manton refuted the first pretty decisively. And the second is what earned you your own smiley.

I lean towards matching socks and trousers, but I'm curious what socks everyone wears for light summer suits like cream linen. I've tried socks of similar tone (very light colored), but that looks wrong to my eye, and I revert to something darker, but still light compared to Serious Business Wear.

I have some light socks that I think work quite well. I also have some medium blues and burgs, and dull greens and browns--not bright just medium. I have a lot of socks, which helps.

I really don't like very dark socks with light pants, except with black shoes. I think the early 60s look of a light gray suit, dark socks and black shoes can be quite nice, kind of summer formal.

Stitch, if people aren't commenting it's because it's probably some combination of meh styling and meh photography. It's not stirring people to love or hate it, so they don't post about it. So it's.... meh. redface.gif

I'm not at my computer right now, posting from my phone. Can you spell it out for me?

frown.gif I think that it is in excellent taste. And very pleasing to the eye.

It is almost impossible to find truly matching colors so I get a sock with a two color fine pattern (herringbone, fine lines, birdseye, etc.) with one color very close to the pant and then introduce another color.

This isn't cream but you get the idea. Here is a khaki similar to the pant with a bit of gray and white to add color.

There was nothing wrong with what you posted beyond that it is not really in good taste. The tie is simply ugly, IMO, I have a thing against red ties. but the worst aspect by far is the totally cliched combination of navy suit, white shirt and red tie, like you are going to a candidate's debate as one of the candidates.
Judging from the law books in the background, I would guess you are a lawyer. Well, it would be completely possible for you to dress within the confines of what we here consider good taste and not in any way jeopardize your professional standing. If you are interested in that, cool, if not, just know that you are not going to get any love in this thread with outfits like that. It's outside the scope. So the only reason to post it would be if you wanted to hear honest feedback, which was bound to be negative.

Fair enough. And though you no doubt didn't mean it as a compliment, I was shooting exactly for the cliched navy suit/white shirt/red tie candidate debate look today, so "bullseye" for me. It was not accidental, and it had the desired effect in the real world.

The tie isn't my favorite, either, if I'm honest about it.

My posts in this thread in the future will be per the thread's "rules" as best I can.

I wear navy socks 24/7 except (1) to the gym and (2) with a dinner jacket.

I have like 30 pairs and they're all awesome.

And sometimes socks match your pants because, quite frankly, that's the freakin' pair you pulled out of the drawer, and sometimes, who cares?
