While there is black in the pattern IMO the black and white give the impression of gray and purple for the jacket. Try end on end light blue shirting or chambray to add texture. I prefer them with sportscoats to the smooth broadcloth shirts with little or no surface texture.
Also I wouldn't mind this with a navy neat with a purple pattern such as this, if worn with the right blue shirt. Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Also I agree with pB that a brown tie would be nice. I find that brown and purple have very similar colour values and can be very complimentary.

thanks for all the tips, L.

i have a brown tie on the way, cashmere herringbone tho, not knit, might work. ill see when it arrives. but i do need a knit chocolate, will give a try when that purchase is made.

as to the blue/purple knit, i see where you are going, but i have nothing to fit that bill. frown.gif

where is that pic from?

It is my personal preference, and I know there is opposition here, that neat patterns do work with busy sportscoats if the shirt is plain.

o/o, what do you think of the white OCBD/black tie combo that Stitchy wore today?

Manton likes black ties. gdl likes magical ties. I like purple ties. pB likes black shoes. Ed likes navy socks. sb identifies with stitchy's red beard. Levoosh likes to steal tie boxes. Tis the way stuff works.

Keep doing you, stitch.

Beautiful lapels but a more substantial tie is needed to balance them
