Gonna be the voice of dissent here - not because of the tie, but because of the shirt. Not only is it white (I think I made my point about white shirts and sport coats...), but it's a white BD shirt, worn with a black tie. I cannot think of a single occasion when that would be a good idea.

The tie looks brown to me. But yes a light blue BD collar would look better.

Really? Wouldn't that work nicely with a grey suit as classic 'mericun business wear?

i have to say, despite admitting to your far greater sartorial accumen, i think a SC and a white shirt can be just fine.

that being said, if i went white non BD with the black tie, youd still dislike the white with the SC. would you really wear a blue shirt with this SC? what shade, gimme an answer and ill give it a try, buddy.

as to an appropriate occasion for todays combo? at my office, today. i dont think anyone here is concerned with the formal/non formal combo. smile.gif

That sounds horrific

I don't claim any higher position of sartorial acumen - I just think it is rarely a good option - may work in a minimalist / fashion-forward outfit, but then not with an OCBD

The white spread-collar shirt you were wearing the other day was one less layer of bad IMO. Yes, I would wear a light blue shirt with this SC - why not? It has grey/black and purple in it, all fine with light blue.

I have a white OCBD. I only wear it untucked with denim.

I don't like button-down collars with ties in general. But they're always a bad idea if the shirt is white and the tie is black - I just cannot fathom how that could ever be a good idea.

lol, i did that already. was ok.

I did see that but I was having site issues so couldn't post or comment for a while. I much preferred the blue short navy tie. While there is black in the pattern IMO the black and white give the impression of gray and purple for the jacket. Try end on end light blue shirting or chambray to add texture. I prefer them with sportscoats to the smooth broadcloth shirts with little or no surface texture.

Also I wouldn't mind this with a navy neat with a purple pattern such as this, if worn with the right blue shirt.

Also I agree with pB that a brown tie would be nice. I find that brown and purple have very similar colour values and can be very complimentary.

I think he means a white shirt with a BD collar and black tie with a sport coat. It has a bit of an identity crisis.

I think the jacket is too busy for this tie. I think a light blue BD shirt with either a chocolate, or navy tie (preferably knit) would look good. I think the texture of a knit, or even grenadine is interesting without creating too much going on between the tie and jacket.

But I suggested a grey suit confused.gif

edit: this in reply to pB one post up.

also edit: I see gdl managed to reply to my question 1 minute before I posted it, which is awesome.
