Interesting! It's actually the first time I've heard such a comment, usually it's the opposite with too little contrast between patterns.
Would be interesting to hear more opinions on this. I've added a picture taken from a little longer distance in my original post.

When patterns are different (lines vs neat) I like scale to have less contrast. Compare to zbromers where similar shirt is next to smaller scaled tie

I will split the difference. two large patters next to each other pretty much always looks terrible. Two small patterns, eg pencil stripe + neat, can look OK or at least better. But it's not better than varying the scale. Mr Chris looks good here. Bromer did too, but that's because his shirt fuzzes out to a solid at a distance.
