indeed it is. i asked this last time, and got no reply. is it really ok to wear a blue shirt with a SC that has so much black in it? it seems odd to me.
thanks for the other tips.
i thought that, same patterns, but different scale (small check SC, large check tie) was ok?
also, again, any other tie recs for this SC. manton? gdl? bueller? anyone?
Ima small timer (and even if I weren't) so feel free to ignore.
The sharpest / most formal look is based on black and white. So a casual outfit needs something to soften that. That jacket is obviously informal and already black / white so needs something to break that up.
I'd stay away from powder or baby blue (which is what I imagine you're intuiting with your question about blue - black) buy a nice greyish blue would look good. Not too dark but something obviously not white.
Finish it with a black or maybe navy nit grenadine or knit. Maybe a dark brown. Could also look at something else with texture - linen, shantung, etc.
The jacket looks busy since it has a white ground. I think a patterned tie would be very tough. Maybe a repp stripe if you really don't want to wear a solid.
I think a big part of the problem is the jacket itself. Too close to a suiting without actually being that straightforward.
Because he is a man of stature and substance - a lion in winter. Barker Blacks are for young men who think "being edgy" means buying shoes with a skull and crossbone decoration rather than knowing how to kill a man with a piece of chalk and a roll of tape (like OD/OT).

i would certainly not ignore you!
i hear ya, and appreciate you taking the time to share that. i may try that. i have no issue with solid ties. i quite like them. i just wanted to try the houndstooth on houndstooth, out for a spin. of course, irl, i have gotten lots of compliments. a sure sign of SF failure, lol.
