I hope you weren't offended on my behalf.

Cornel West is the man. Obviously it was a beard reference. But he certainly has a unique approach to style. I heard him give a talk once, and he said every day it's like going into battle. He's ready to die, and if he drops dead, he's coffin-ready. "I got my tie, my white shirt, everything. Just fix my Afro nice in the coffin."

Still wondering about that black wrap around his neck. Not really a scarf...I don't think.

520 is a great shade, I have it myself. It's not navy, though, it's quite a bit lighter. I would say that it does have a slightly gray cast. Anyway, the point is, if you want something you can use as a totally classic in every way blazer, that is not it.

manton suggestion from one of the books on what fabric would be a totally classic in every way blazer?

thanks in advance.

Is there a kind of heuristic that says it's a good idea to get repp stripe ties less wide than you would an equivalent solid or foulard? Because they bisect the body, bolder stripes can make the whole tie look wider, or so I have a vague sense, at least. Is this my imagination?

I have been wondering what the hell that is for years. It looks like he cut the neck off a turtleneck. Does he have a tracheotomy scar he wants to hide?

good rec. thanks.
fascinating !

Well, I'm not ashamed of it. I purchased a cream silk square and it clashed with everything. What I realized is that it was closer to beige, which is a fail. As such, this time around, I want to make sure to nail the cream silk square and this was one of the options that presented itself, so I floated it by the expert. No shame in my game...:foo: knows his ****.

Didn't Foo suggest somewhere he'd order a forum special run of cream squares from Charvet, just so he wouldn't have to endure wading through so much square fail in the good taste thread? I'm sure he was joking, but i'd be in if he wasn't. For that matter I could nip across to Paris and buy a bunch, but obviously I'd have to cover my expenses - 1st class eurostar and a decent meal for the missus and I, and a room at Le Bristol or similar - maybe $250 per square if I can sell 10 or so...

Sorry to be the wet blanket, I honestly don't think that cream square above is THAT nice. The edges are hand-sewn, but okay. Maybe the photograph doesn't do it justice.

I bought this below from v, but since taste is subjective, call me out on this one --

I don't like that one, the colour and matte finish are just perfect, but the self-motif, not so much IMO.
