I understand that the tie is functionally a solid and works with the shirt.  And, it would work with the jacket.

But the three together, i.e. that tie with that shirt and that jacket - well, it seems a little jarring to me.  Perhaps I simply don't appreciate the "look" as executed.

The blue overcheck is a problem for me (picks up on part of the square, which picks up on the tie, but the tie/coat don't quite click), and I'm not in love with the herringbone of the tie.

Clags' and Canta's discussion on black ties made me decide to break out my black knit today. Mid-grey flannel trousers, white OCBD, navy patch pocket SC, and black knit tie.

It just occurred to me that there might be ppl in this thread who have no idea who aportnoy is.

FWIW, I wore my black cashmere Panta tie with a mid-grey fresco suit this past Monday. I was ahead of the curve.

Get that thing out. Out of all black ties, a cashmere knit is probably the nicest I can think of...

BTW, I don't particularly like the cloth in the jacket Cantabrigian has posted, but the silhouette is very, very nice.

I'd be interested to hear if you try them and/or B&Tailor.

The stuff on the blogs look darn good. Granted things tend to when they're set up for photoshoots or worn by very thin guys.

But I manage to get to Asia every few years and would make a detour to SK if their work really is that good and if the price were in line w/ HK.

I go back an forth on the overall concept myself but you really can't deny that it's a thing. I mostly stay in the city since I have zero cars and one little baby but whenever you go outside the M25 (and stay far, far away from Essex), you're almost guaranteed to see someone in a patterned tweed + check shirt + emblematic or wool tie.

This is a typical example in my limited experience--

I guess tradition takes some of the edge of jarring.

But there is a whole lot going on there.

The reason I like (and prefer) the example I poasted (again, ignoring the square) is that the jacket isn't one of those overly busy / muddled tweeds and the checks on the shirt are a more manageable scale. It strikes me as an obvious descendant of the Old British Guy on Saturday look but in a way that's a bit fresher / updated without veering off into parody.

But keep in mind this is the opinion of someone who would never wear either the standard or updated version of this look.

For me tweed + solid OCBD or blue end-on-end spread collar + solid knit is the only way I do tweed + tie.
