Do you recommend canvas or leather and why?  Which color is more versatile--the black or the white?

White canvas. Wash them several times and let them air dry. They will have a more relaxed, comfortable look.

Another vote for white canvas. I have a pair in navy canvas, and while I really like them, I just don't find myself wearing them that much.
