For the collective masses:
Sold a SC on eBay....received positive feedback from buyer. About two weeks later get message that he had sent jacket to tailor who had found a moth hole. Buyer wants to keep the jacket and asks if I will foot the bill or a reweaver. I'm quite positive it wasn't there when I had sent the jacket. I apologize as it is quite possible that there could have been a larve working on the jacket and ask for a pic. Clearly a hole has developed. I offer to have him return the jacket or work out a partial refund. Buyer says wants to keep the jacket but will not pay for cost to reweave. Again I tell buyer if he intends to keep jacket I will offer a partial refund but if we cannot work out an amount he will have to return the jacket. Buyer again contacts me and says reweaver has quoted him $80 (He purchased the coat for $100) and that he expects $80 refund. I tell buyer to return the jacket as I will not be refunding $80. Buyer then states "No one else is going to buy a moth infested jackets for more than what I did even with the refund." I offer $20 refund or return of the jacket for full refund.
And so the open item case hits five minutes later. This is where it goes into fantasy buyer land....where he claims he can see a moth hole in my pics and that I was selling the jacket as BNWOT (neither of which is the case). Also has claimed the tailor altered the jacket and had all the labels removed to show off the fancy lining (which in previous email he stated the moth hole was found by the tailor and that they didn't want to start work on it until he was notified about the hole.)
Any ideas from the peanut gallery? At this point I'm planning just to call eBay, forward along all the emails between us, and ask for a return. If I had to guess the outcome of this....he's going to send back something completely different and I'll be screwed either way.

That's crazy. It sounds like he's moving in to get you one way or another. If he's claiming that the tailor removed the labels to "show off" the lining, you have every right to be concerned that he's going to send something else back to you.

Everyone had great advice for you. With any dispute, I'd say remain polite but firm. Provide eBay with all of the evidence that is available. If he didn't notice the hole either, it must not have been too conspicuous, so maybe that will work in your favor.

With anything, and maybe we should all keep this in mind, it's a learning experience. Every time I make a mistake that costs me money, I learn from it quickly. I hope you get to keep the money or the jacket (preferably the former), but it's good to hear cases like these. Next time, you (and everyone reading) know to keep the communication to eBay and to thoroughly inspect all clothing before it's sold. You aren't the only one that has missed something at some point and it sounds like you tried to make it right.

I one time missed a tiny spot on the back of a shirt. I only noticed it as I packed it up to ship, but here's what I did:

I took a picture of the spot and immediately sent it to the buyer. I explained that the listing said there were no stains, but that I must have missed one. I offered to refund his purchase price immediately or I will pay for the shipping to him. If he can't get it out and wants to return it, shipping was on me. He got back to me quickly and thanked me for the offer and said go ahead and send it. When he received it, he said it came out in the wash and that there's no need to pay for the shipping since he received exactly what he bought. He left me positive feedback in the end.

Not all buyers will be as understanding as he was, but it goes to show that honesty is the best policy (not that you weren't!) and trying to make something right works out sometimes.

Blocked... auction link doesn't work though. Says the information isn't available.

Hmmm....let's try this as the link - http://www.ebay.com/itm/120939861907?ssPageName=STRK:MESOX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1559.l2649

And just to clarify for everyone....all communication has been through ebay. Ultimately I increased my refund offer, asked for the new measurements on the jacket and had ebay note my account of my concerns for being returned something different than what was sold.

At this point I'm tempted just to ask for the return, turn it into a cashmere/wool ammo bag and relist.

Is this the hole he is mentioning, located in the middle if this apparent ***** stain?

Of course I don't really know that is what I am seeing, that's just what it looks like from here.

The hole he showed me a pic of...looked much more prominent than that. I have to think that must be the moth bite that got worse once dry cleaned.

As for the ***** in question....ask DM7 where it came from....I just have this thing from consignment.

How do you ship ties? Folded or rolled up, and in a bubble mailer or box?

Until recently, I was shipping rolled in a 2x3x5 box. Had two come back from the same buyer. He claimed they were not as discribed, but never gave an explaination of what he meant. Both were in Excellent shape when sent, but returned a bit creased and required pressing. I assume this is what he was referring to. Now I use a small flat rate priority box with it loosely folded. No feedback on the new method yet.

See Brianpore for other options...which may or may not be considered federal crime.

I've been wondering about that last part, Wes. Didn't stop me though :hide:

Brian's method really does make a great package though.

I think if you actually end up shipping it priority, you are in the clear. Otherwise it is unlikely you would be caught unless the package got caught in a sorter or something and tore open, exposing the naughty stuff.

That happened to me before when I used brown shipping paper around priority boxes. The woman at the post office is the one who told me to do it too. All that happened was the guy I was returning it to had to pay the difference in shipping methods.

Has anyone else noticed a serious decline in interest in summer clothing? I know it's that time when people abandon summer purchases in favor of fall, but I'm not seeing much interest at all in the few warm weather items I have. I haven't listed any tweed/corduroy/coats/boots yet. When do you generally roll out these things? I planned to start at the end of the month.

My linen shirts and sport coats are still selling very well, but the basic short sleeve cotton shirt seems to be stalled. BTW, I have sold about five BR linen sport coats this past month. They have sold between $24 and $40 plus $12.90 for shipping. Seems that I have a difficult time selling high end Italian jackets for much more. I have sold four sweaters this week, which may be signaling the start of the new season. One of the sweaters, a heavy wool one sold to Brazil(?) So not sure that is part of the seasonal flux since it is winter there, or as much as winter that it can be. . .
