just a note, I believe the 12x15 are the biggest that qualify for first class.

So anyway, there is no detail on my listings for returns, except that buyers have 14 days to get a refund, and buyer pays return shipping. Do I have to refund the original shipping cost and can I charge a restocking fee, even if it's not precisely stated in my listing?

 

With that guy's attitude and especially his numerous insults, I'm 100% sure he will never remove his feedback so I don't want to sound like a bitch to you guys but I don't want to make it easy for him...

If ebay has sided in his favor, you'll refund everything, and hope you get the jacket back. Unless you have an email where he told you he would give you bad feedback if you didn't give him a full refund, you're toast.

 

The deal with used clothing is that there is almost always a way for a buyer to find a flaw if they want to return it. In my opinion, it is nearly impossible to "over disclose". I posted a jacket that looked off a bit on the back seam. when I stared at it, there was no specific flaw,  but I added this note to the description anyway: "It also appears to me that the back center seam has been opened to make alterations for the previous owner."

 

Honestly, this forum has done more to help me critically look at a piece of clothing than anything else. when its under the lights, things appear. the single thread pull in that zegna tie you couldn't see in the store. that ghost of the stain that almost came out of the canali shirt. early on, I tried to fix flaws, now, unless its a sure winner or a basic laundering won't fix it, I just throw it into the re-donate box or disclose it, usually with big arrows and words. 

 

Here's my latest:

"Note the white discoloration on the lining. I don’t know what it is and have made no attempt to remove"

 

Much easier would be to get better at selecting items without flaws, but when you get stars in your eyes over the item or you're in a hurry. One reason I like for my wife to go with me. whatever I pick I tell her, "find the reason I shouldn't buy this" and in over half the items, she does find something.  I've had 4-5 buyers contact me about undisclosed flaws. one was holes in a NWT Sir Pendleton shirt. I sold it in the original plastic. this was my 3rd or 4th sale. I figured, nwt, still in plastic, I was home free. I saw the pics, refunded everything, asked him to re-donate, and without telling him, sent him a nwt wool rich shirt his size with a hand-written apology. 2nd time was a guy bought a pair of zegna pants, size 38/26 that had 14 or 15 pleats iirc. He complained the lining was shredded to the knee. could have been I didn't look down there at the time. Full refund, please re-donate the pants. Another time, the buyer found a small patch inside the pants that I didn't see because I didn't turn it inside out. He asked for a 20% refund, which was ok with me. One guy, I just finally asked: "what will it take for you to be happy?" he told me and we negotiated from there. 

 

I only point these out to say when a problem occurs, and it happens to everyone, how you reply matters. there is no % in being combative, until you have to be.

 

I don't know you at all, but even though your english is excellent, it is sometimes more "in your face" than I think you intend. I say that because when I lived in Milan, about a year into living there I would say some things that offended people unintentionally and it almost always happened when I was translating an americanism to italian. after 2 years, I had a good feel for the italian idioms and thought in italian and that problem solved itself.

 

For the most part, buyers just want you to solve their problem. Some people are unreasonable and they think everyone is out to screw them over. Others, think they're shopping at bergdorfs. 

 

There is zero upside to not disclosing a flaw. While you may get away with it once in a while, the ultimate price you pay as a seller isn't worth it.

You are correct "Maximum size is 15″ long x 12" high x 3/4” thick." per the USPS website. Having shipped 100's and 100's of these without issue I wouldnt worry about it honestly. Once you fold the flat over anyway its usually the correct size.

If you think like this, it saves you a lot of trouble in the long run. Items in a thrift store are usually there for a reason.

Thanks for your answer. I agree with you 100% that I have to become more picky or just describe the item with extreme care to avoid such cases in the future.

 

Although, concerning this case : the guy said in the 'case messages' that he sent back the jacket, days before eBay ruling. I have no tracking information/nothing whatsoever. He's in the USA so from I understand, you guys ALWAYS have tracking info on shipments? Even to Canada? Could something enlighten me a bit on that matter?

 

What if I never receive the jacket? Will eBay refund him anway/remove the comment? Because that would be weird/unfair for me...

 

Last resort, is there a way to appeal the case?  or I guess I have no chance ever to win that...

Anyway the only thing that matters to me is the neg feedback so I really don't know how I could get rid of it...

Question about combining international shipments on EBay. The EBay Global Shipping Program is fast and easy for a seller but does not permit the Seller to form an invoice for a combined shipping order. My buyer in Taiwan claims that he has never had to pay customs charges when the seller sends the item directly using USPS. I am only comfortable with the EBay program because it's all I have used and keeps the transaction within the safety net of EBay.

How does one combine shipping for an international customer?

Is this buyer correct that he should not pay custom charges?

I am a rookie at selling clothing, but I have over 500 positive feedback selling used camera equipment, much of it internationally.  I NEVER use eBay's Global Shipping Program, and here's why:

 

a.  It is my understanding of eBay's GSP that they consolidate items from sellers all going to the same country, give them to a freight reshipper, along with customs duties collected from the buyer, and the reshipper ships them and pays the duties.  I have had many customers complain to me about my shipping costs when I used the GSP, only to find that eBay had collected exorbitant customs duties, (30-50%), and just listed them as shipping costs!  Essentially, they contacted me, asking why I was gouging them so badly, and I had to convince them that I had no control over it.  It's never good for customer relations to just say "sorry, it's out of my control."  The best case scenario is that they're still unhappy, but blame eBay instead of you.  That's a lose/lose in my book.

 

Thus, I NEVER use the GSP anymore.  But then again, paying $45 to ship an $600-2000 piece of camera equipment by Priority Mail wasn't bad, while for a shirt or tie it would be much different.  My rule was that if it wasn't $75 or more, no international sales.  That wasn't hard with cameras, but I'm sure it's a bigger problem with clothing.

 

b.  You can't combine shipping costs safely using the GSP.  I did once, when using the GSP, put two items in the same box, but there was never any record that the second item had shipped, other than the weight of the box being heavier than just the single item.  It went fine, but if the buyer had disputed the fact that he had received both items, I would have been in trouble.  I highly doubt that eBay would have found in my favor, based solely on shipping weight alone.

 

If you need to use GSP, let your buyers know ahead of time that eBay will collect customs duty, and you have no control over how much it will be, and that you won't be able to combine shipping.  True, they can't leave you low ratings on shipping cost, but it doesn't improve their mood any, and unhappy customers are likely to find other flaws and issues with your items.

 

c. eBay has been awesome for me for ten years, giving me a customer base that I could never dream of building on my own, but IMO they have lost site of their essence, and are trying to just become another Amazon.  If they're not careful, they may kill the goose that laid the golden egg, and we'll all be the losers.

 

Just my 2 cents worth.

100% agreed. As a Canadian I hate it when people use the GSP. I don't know about other Europeean countries but the Canadian customs services will NEVER collect duty from something shipped with USPS even if they 'should'. I always ask people with items I wanna buy if it's possible not to use the GSP..:brick:

How do you add tracking to first-class package service on eBay, or does it do it automatically? I've only shipped Priority before.

If you buy it through eBay it automatically has tracking (if it's international you'll see red letters saying Delivery Confirmation is not available on some places)

First Class has more tracking available via international than Priority does, or so it seems...

Just looked this up... Those limits only apply to flat envelopes. Bulky envelopes use package rates no matter what. If you choose "first class package" on eBay (rather than "first class large envelope"), you are using the correct postage.

+1 you are correct. "packages" are only up to 13 oz for 1st class. As said never even had a 2nd thought about it till the post earlier.

Just noticed something that could be fucking sellers over a bit. I went to leave feedback for an item I purchased. I selected 5 star for everything and then entered my feedback. I hit the tab button and it tabbed to select a 1-star rating for 'How accurate was the item description?' I almost submitted it but noticed it at the last second. I wonder if this has caused any problems in the past. I recreated the situation and took screen grabs. 

 

Here is a screengrab with my cursor in the feedback field. Notice that all details about this purchase are at 5 stars.

 

Here's where I accidentally clicked tab. 

 

And here is a shot of what I was about to submit, but caught it just in time. It turned the accuracy section into 'Very inaccurate'.

 

 

That's kind of bullshit, right? I'm going to send this to eBay in a bit.

What else is bullshit is getting a defect for canceling a transaction that the buyer requested...this just happened to me, and I am now paying for their mistake.  I suppose eBay is pushing me to rather ignore the mistake from the buyer, allow the transaction to go into a case resolution for non payment, and have a non paying record ding on that buyer....so contradictory from eBay to have sellers make buyers happy, yet when canceling a transaction is in place, only us buyers will get a defect...that ruined my day, and its only 9am.

That is correct- they ship it to a local place and then remail it to you from there.

 

The Global shipping program however is the biggest scam for Ebay ever - the charges are usually massively higher than you would pay if it was sent by the USPS. I suspect you are losing a lot of sales to it as it jacks up the prices for us so high, especially for people in countries that have a trade agreement with the US (like Canada).
