Buying and Selling on eBay: Tips, Tricks, Problems & Questions

I decided to create a store to sell my non-consignable stuff and posted one auction as a trial run. I read almost this whole thread to see what key words were used. Built a lighting set up for photos similar to Wes's. Hopefully they are good. If not, not sure how to make them better.

My first thrift shoe purchase were j&m chukkas at goodwill that I bought for $3.40. Cleaned, applied leather lotion and polished..

Posted on a Friday morning at $25 with a BIN of $60. They sold yesterday for $67.

I felt good about this for my first thrift sale, but it makes me wonder why the first guy to bid $60 didn't hit the BIN button and end the auction.?

Is this common for items to go for more than the BIN price?

My other past sales were concert tickets I couldn't use and a couple items that didn't fit after I bought on eBay and I just was getting rid of them.

I've designed a different template using garagesale than the one on this auction that goes live tomorrow. Appreciate constructive feedback.

Listing looks real good, pictures are better than 99% of sellers. Only thing that I see that I would have added was the color of the shoe into the title.

The pictures look very good, but why only 6? You get 12 free and the other 6 literally would take you less than a minute to shoot, the more the better for the higher end stuff. When I see items without a ton of pictures I assume that the lister is trying to minimize something. Check out Brian's listing when I see this, I assume I have seen the whole shoe. I would think it also makes it harder for returns.

Yup, on some items there just aren't 12 things to take a pic of (IMO) like a white BB shirt. Shoes, I can always get 10-12 pics in. Looks like those things were pretty hammered before you shined them up based on the wrinkles in the leather, great sale. J&M gets no love on SF, but I do very well with them on the bay, same with good Cole Haans, so I always pick up when they're <$15 and need little to no work, they go quick.

@shoelove, thanks for the clarification on the BIN pricing. I was wondering what was wrong with those people.

Btw, spent 3 hours thrifting and think I had a good day..

J&M used to be my favorite shoe back when I had a dress-up office job...kinda forgot about them - will have to keep an eye out for them in good nick well as Cole Haan for flipping.

For any of you CA residents, do you charge tax to your customers who are in CA? Are we required to do so? What tax rate should I use?

Works great, I use that for everything. Just avoid using the debit portion, they charge I think a couple bucks. I purposely forgot the PIN, and where I thrift, I never have issues with stores not taking credit.

I've asked this question many times, read many articles, and still cannot convince myself of any definite answer. As of right now, I do not, but really should find out if I should be...

They only charge if you are using an ATM to take out cash- and it's not really them, it's whoever owns the ATM that gets the $. You should use as "check card" and sign for transaction, you get 1% cash back. You don't get cash back from debit card purchases. For you, functionally it's identical, cash still comes directly out of PP account. For the Merchant, that 1% comes straight out of the transaction. In fact all the credit card cash back and other incentives come direct from the merchant (universally, not just a PP thing).
