Yes, I either wear a dress watch or no watch

Again, this is not a rule I would apply to others - but I have relatively small wrists, and big chunky watches with metallic bracelets look absurd on me

- I don't wear black socks, ever (I guess black tie would be the exception, but that's not something I do very often)

- I only wear FC shirts with dark, solid coloured suits, and the shirt has to be white

- No button downs with a jacket/suit

- No oxford shoes with odd jackets

- I never wear socks that match my trousers or shoes

- No fun socks

- No solid pocket squares except white linen

iirc, you started out with derbies. on the other hand you rarely post your "wheels" these days. just curious, where's your distinguishing line for gunboats.

Ah, I misspoke. Should have said "No longwings"

LB and the dreaded charcoal trouser again. As well as grey sports coat.

You shouldn't read these as rules, hence the title "Non-Rule rules." These are just individuals' personal guidelines, and do not make the wearer more stylish. If you tried to observe all of the rules in this thread, you would not be able to wear anything.

Of course, but when some of the highest ranking members here post "rules" I clearly breach, the feeling of "unstylishness" is impossible to stop. I didn't say I cared, it was just (at least tried to be) a satirical comment on all the "rules" in the thread. I personally don't follow any strict rules, even though I probably should, if I like what I see in the mirror - that is what I wear. One rule I never break though is the "no black sock"-rule of Fredrik above, but that's because it just don't looks good.

Note how the true light gray of the jacket brings forth the pale beige skin tones of his hand.

Also, the higher contrast of his shirt, jacket, and tie brings forth the man more than his assistant.

He probably doesn't care about the existence of color theory, but instinctively he's arrived there on his own.

Not 100% sure about this one, but repeating figures on a tie should be on the diagonal.

dah@394: brown cavalry twill, khaki or olive moleskin. Dark green cords, maybe.

Hardy: those jackets have a windowpane. The prohibition is SOLID gray odd jackets. I doubt I buy either one but they don’t look terrible. Re: charcoal trousers, I am not in the foo camp on that one, I think they can be OK provided there is sufficient contrast between top and bottom. E.g., they should never be worn with navy blue.

Another rule: motifs other than stripes and checks should not repeat in an outfit.

In fact "dotted" patterns should not repeat either, even if the motifs are different.

^^^ that is a good rule, like Keller's "no repeat ingredients from dish to dish in the same meal."
