Non-Rule "Rules" - Page 20

Back to the non-rule rules:

1. If I wear a suit without a tie, I wear a patterned shirt. It looks less like I just forgot to put on a tie. Still, I do this as rarely as possible.
2. We are "business casual" at my office, but I wear a jacket or blazer or suit coat every day. No casual Fridays allowed.
3. I have casual cotton jackets that I wear in the summertime, but I don't pair them with nice wool trousers. Cotton goes with cotton. I have been known to wear a navy linen blazer with wool trousers, however.
4. I am not a purist on the whole "orphaned" jackets or trousers thing.
5. I go to as many black tie events as possible, and I always wear a self-tied bowtie.
6. I almost never wear shorts, jeans or T-shirts. I'll occasionally wear a polo shirt in a casual setting, but it can't have a logo on it.
7. If James Bond wouldn't wear it, neither would I. But just because James Bond does wear it doesn't mean I would. See "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" through "License to Kill."
8. I don't give a rat's ass about the clothing brand or even who made it, as long as it fits well, looks good, is comfortable and well-made.
9. I never, ever have an undershirt peeking out of my open collar.
10. Shirts get tucked in.

@ doc, and manton, though i think i know your opinion already (and anyone else who would like to comment). here is the gray odd jacket i have. miserable?

A little texture might look better though. Maybe a shade darker too. With patch pockets, so it looks like less of an orphan

Sincere question- is it possible to be in the middle-middle class or lower-middle class and be well dressed? I'm noticing a pattern with foo's posts (not so much with manton) that unless one 'commissions' their clothing they're an asshole who doesn't care about aesthetics.

For instance, can I get my jackets from Suit Supply and my trousers from Brooks Brothers and still be considered 'well-dressed' or should I quit while I'm ahead. Likewise, can I put on a pair of APCs and a white tshirt on a Saturday and be considered a good person?

I feel like the only grey jackets that work are in herringbone or tight houndstooth patterns or are heavy-looking. A light cotton grey jacket doesn't look right, nor does an orphaned windowpane.

Stitches' looks a little suit coat-y to me. Mine are a little darker and maybe have more blue. But it's hard to tell from a pic -- maybe Stitches' is less suity IRL. I might like a slightly darker bown trou with it.

Cucinelli has made a mint off my slouchy tan and gray steeze.

These all look like vomit--beigish, grayish vomit. Your sources impeach the weight of your opinion.

I'm with Manton and Foo on the difficulty of grey jackets, but for the sake of argument, I think these work with charcoal trousers





I've also seen some interesting AA combinations with white trousers, but in practice, I don't think this works. With few exceptions, such as grey herringbone tweeds, there's something formal to me about grey that makes it a strange for an odd jacket.

no, its pretty suit-y imo as well. i am a huge BC fran as well. was in their outlet a few weeks ago and felt like a kid (albeit with not enough dough) in a candy shop.

Not my favorite look, but at least the first and third seem to have some texture to them which makes them less objectionable. That Zegna on the end looks pretty blah to me.
