Some people sip it neat, some people on the rocks with a splash of fresh lime juice and maybe a bit of simple syrup (I do both of these), and I actually make rum and cokes (easy on the Coke) with Zaya and Boylan's cane cola with fresh lime juice, and they're absolutely delicious and refreshing. There's also the Dark and Stormy and Mojito, excellent warm weather drinks for drinking in tall glasses by the pool with a cigar. I'm sure someone will come along and say it's pointless to use premium rum in a mixed drink, but you can taste a marked improvement over even Mount Gay which is a good value rum, and it's a giant leap over base-line Bacardi, which you couldn't pay me to drink. Assuming you put enough rum in.

Bacardi is just bad-tasting, I would say the best low-level rum is Cap Morgan. With $100 I would get Makers Mark, Ketel 1, Captain Morgan, and either Sauza Hornitos or Tanqueray 10, depending on which of those last 2 hellmakers you prefer. If you are a tequila fan, maybe Cazadores. I'm no expert though.

OK, I have to admit I have only had rum-and-cokes with Bacardi-level rum and unknowingly wrote off the whole drink. I will give them a try with something a bit better.
