How wide should a suit hanger be?

I'm curious how much difference a hanger makes for preserving sportcoats, suits, and jackets? I know a thicker hanger is much better than wire hangers, obviously, but once you get into solid hangers does higher quality make a huge difference?

I recently bought a bunch of these from STP: http://www.sierratradingpost.com/the-great-american-hanger-company-wooden-suit-hanger-non-slip-bar-6-pack~p~1079c/?filterString=s~hangers%2F&colorFamily=02

They are 2" thick at the ends by 18" across.

I have 2 questions:

1. What is the ideal width for suit/jacket hangers? Should it be shorter than the shoulder, hit right at the shoulder, or be slightly longer than the shoulder? Is this too wide for 17.5" shoulder-shoulder suits? The tips barely extend into the arms but don't pull on any of the jackets. Is this bad for the jacket?

2. They have those annoying plastic teeth on the rods (for pants). Will this damage fabric over time?

It can make quite a significant difference.

See, "A Detailed Guide to Sizing Your Suit Hangers," an April 21, 2011, entry at Kirby Allison's Hanger Project blog - http://www.hangerproject.com/blog/Suit-Hanger-Sizing/.

I suppose it's possible. I can't really say more than that, without examining the teeth in question. And maybe not even then, since I'm no expert in such matters.

There are 3 critical issues to consider when it comes to choosing a suit jacket or sport coat hanger:

1. The curvature and thickness of the neck.

2. The curvature and thickness of the two shoulder supports.

3. The overall curvature of the hanger.

As regards the trouser rod on a suit jacket or sport coat hanger, I prefer two hangers instead: a suit jacket/sport coat hanger and a pant hanger with soft clips that enable the pant to be hung at the waist.

Interesting, thanks for the links and info.

The sizing on the hanger project seems off? 15.5 shoulder for 38?

My suits are all 38 but typically measure 17.5 across the shoulders. I guess the 18" is too long then, I'll use them on my heavy coats instead.

This might help you.

Whilst the author is clearly a very wealthy man who has a warehouse not a wardrobe his ideas are nonetheless good if unattainable for most.
