Shawl collar with frog buttons. This was by far the most original stylish piece! Too bad about the tie.

When he's presenting he walks onstage with both buttoned and delivers his opening joke. Then it appears as if he notices something in the audience and quickly and decisively unbuttons the bottom. I can't imagine how one would explain a sartorial rule to someone in mime that quickly, but that's sure what it looked like... I think Ellen also undid the button on her first tuxedo after going off-stage, so maybe Manton's running around fixing things or something.

Not only do Beyonce and Jennifer Hudson look gorgeous...they just brought the house down. What a performance.

I don't know if this is an example of why muscular guys shouldn't wear DBs, but Daniel Craig looks huge. Do you think they didn't let him keep the Brioni or would it be tacky to wear a costume?

George Clooney has notch lapels, same-fabric lapels: he's no Cary Grant!

What I learned from the Academy Awards - - -

Unless you're Leo DiCaprio, don't ever imagine that wearing a black necktie with a formal outfit is going to look classy. In my opinion, the people who copped out of wearing a bow tie simply looked like shopkeepers or bookkeepers, as clueless as, say, wearing a tuxedo to a morning wedding.

Even fanciful colors would have looked better than the funereal neckties.

I also thought he pulled off the necktie the best of the men that tried it. Toby Maguire's looked terrible.

I think the worst of the night was Phillip Symour Hoffman. There is something to be said for trying to be a bit Bohemian, but COME ON!!! At least wear a suit that fits (and don't button the bottom button to emphasise how fat it makes you look), wear a respectable tie and COMB YOUR HAIR!

Gore looked great, but my overall best in show (so to say) was Eddie Murphy in that great midnight blue tux. Honorable mentions go to the great DB's of Seinfeld and even to some extent Jack Black. Seinfeld would've gotten the nod but for jacket cuffs that were too long.

Going into more Sartorialist blog level detail, Hugh Jackman's jacket had great shoulders, and I loved the lapel role on Tobey MacGuire's jacket.

Worst was Phillip Seymour Hoffmann, as previously mentioned. I don't expect class from Tom Cruise, and he met expectations. Peter Toole was another head scratcher for me, wearing that hideous "I'm in my drawing room diddling my mate from Eton" smoking jacket in a public place.

Paltrow and Eva Green (!!!!!!!) shared the much-coveted "one I'd want to take home with me after the event" award.

Was it midnight blue? It looked like lighter-than-charcoal grey in the semi-natural light in the carpet!

And I think Jack Black just confirmed the rule about fat men staying away from DBs.

I would have preferred besom pockets but otherwise a great looking tux.
