It's not that paisely ties are bad. I just, personally, really don't like that one. So the whole outfit to me looks bad. If you had a different tie, maybe it would not. I think pushing down the square to show less of it would also help. leaving everything else the same, a microdot tie in only two colors would work and still be four patterns. A busy tie is too much.
Guys, I need help.
Can you recommend colours/patterns to go with this jacket? I don't want to repeat the mistakes seen in the picture. What colours would go best if I were to wear mid grey pants?
mantonian, the collar on that jacket, your right side.. it lifts a bit at the gorge (I know you are lifting your other side and that effects it). I get that on some jackets also. I have lowered my gorge going forward so as the have the colar lie flat on my chest as opposed to lying on that curved part around the clavicle/chest/shoulder. I see that a lot with higher gorge jackets, a little bit of lift on the collar. what are your thoughts?[/quote]
Ed, not enough fullness on the top collar is the main cause.

Never wear that tie and pocket square together. Or, possibly, at all.
I think I'm seeing gold and blue overchecks. Correct? Although the pattern and color are not to my taste, I think the tie could be salvaged in a less electric shade of yellow. The PS could be white linen; a large-patterned silk in a drier hand, perhaps in a dark green, navy, or burgundy; or some silk with dots in a non-vibrant color.
