I named my son John. Common yes but I was looking for an international name. Most people know how to spell it and pronounce it where ever he goes.

Could be so they can avoid any possible trademark and patent litigation?

Could be. I named my daughter Intelle and I haven't gotten any legal hassles about it.

EDIT: FWIW, the best name for a boy is Lindsay. Science has proven this. It's what I would name my son if I had one, and if no one else vetoed my choice. (And let's be honest, someone probably would.)

Lindsay is a twerp's name.

in colombia you have a lot of working class people named after famous americans and brits, but spelled incorrectly - laydi die; truman; kenaday; etc

I named each of my kids with a name that could be spanish, hebrew or american. and gave them a relativly common middle name, so if they didn't like their first name they could fall back on it.

The worst girl-boy name is Kim, hands down. Not because it's super girly or anything. It's just really overused.

Another great girl-boy name is June. It's not overused.
