Songs where the cover is better than the original - Page 2

These Days - Nico (Jackson Browne cover).

Since U Been Gone - Ted Leo (Kelly Clarkson cover)...no joke.

Stevie Ray Vaughn's version of "Voodoo Chile" is as good if not better than Hendrix

Dj Spooky -re works Eric Satie, maybe not better but I like the modern twist.

Anthony Marinelli remixes some Herb Alpert.

Mercury Rev does Chopin's "Nocturne in C Sharp Minor"

I also like Johnny Cash's version of Soundgardens "Rusty Cage"

Best cover of all time is "Respect" by Aretha Franklin (originally by Otis Redding). Nothing else comes close.

"I Will Always Love You" by Whitney Houston (originally by Dolly Parton) is pretty good as well.

The other day at the gym, I said this to a woman in almost exactly the same words and she nearly fainted she was so upset.

Dylan's an amazing songwriter but a lousy performer. As good as some of his performances are, his songs sound soooo much better when someone else covers them.

Some good suggestions here -- many thanks. I'm familiar with many already and agree. Soft Cell's Tainted Love -- God, that brings back memories.

Terry Hall and Jane Weidlin wrote that song together iirc, so technically it's not a cover as both songs were released nearly the same time

my picks:

-I Fought the Law - The Clash (original by the Crickets)
-David Watts - The Jam (The Kinks)
-Slow Down - The Jam (Larry Williams)
-Ace of Spades - Three Bad Jacks (Motorhead)
-and a sizeable chunk of the Detroit Cobras discography (all their songs are covers of obscure 50s.60s RnB/soul)

re: Tainted Love by Soft Cell....ugh, the original song (Gloria Jones) is SOOOO much better, but then I'm a soul freak so I'm biased

Yeah, it's a Neil cover. I heard him sing Only Love this past summer with Crosby and Nash on backing vocals...it was surreal. So beautiful.

In keeping with the "Dylan can't sing" theme...Bryan Ferry doing "A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall" is SO SO SO much better than the original.

I think most of Nouvelle Vague's stuff is better than the original, with the exception of Guns of Brixton and Bela Lugosi's Dead.

I used to think Little Bitch was better by The Ordinary Boys. What a retard I am.

Edited - pretend I never said anything; I don't want to end up in some endless music snob flame war.

Hard to Handle by Black Crowes (Redding cover) [questionable preference]
Diamonds And Rust by Judas Priest (Baez cover)
+1 I Fought the Law by the Clash, one of my favorites ever
Take me to the river by Talking Heads (Al Green)
Higher Ground by RHCP (Stevie Wonder)
Poison Ivy by Lambrettas (some 50s band) [questionable, a bit too ska for me]
Sweet Jane by Cowboy Junkies (Lou Reed)
Cum on Feel the Noize by Quiet Riot (Slade)
Satisfaction by Devo (Stones) [questionable]
Nobody does it better by Radiohead (Carly Simon)
Be thankful for what you've got by Massive Attack (William DeVaughn)

Couple more:
Hombre Secreto by Plugz (Repo Man soundtrack) (Secret Agent Man by the Ventures IIRC)
Gloomy Sunday by Heather Nova (Various/disputed) Great voice, somewhat unfortunate synth background...
