Do I need the landline?

The major "bell" companies will just continue jacking up prices, so get away from them as fast as you can. Use 1-800-free411 instead of regular 411, there's no reason to pay for the same information. And there's no escaping the phone taxes; they'll keep adding more and more taxes to your phone bill because people don't look very closely at their phone bill.

If you have good coverage on your cell and little to no static or dropped calls, and if you have or can get a plan that has a lot of "anytime" minutes, then yeah, just use your cell.

FWIW, I get my landline service from my cable company (as well as digital cable and high speed internet). Bundled together, all three come out to fairly competitive rates. Plus, the landline includes unlimited local and long distance calling.

Got rid of mine a year ago. Cell phone bill went up, but I don't miss the land line.

All I ever got on that phone was Sears and politicians.

I have DSL and when I got rid of my landline they (verizon) actually kept my phone number / phone line but it's now used as a 'dry loop' to maintain my DSL connection. I have to pay $5 per month for the convenience.

ditto.

And, if a cellphone breaks or is lost, until you get it fixed or have it replaced, you are SOL. With a landline, you can walk yourself over to the closest radioshack, and... done.
I have a cheapo cell as a backup. If my primary phone breaks, I'll just put the sim card into the backup.

How often do we have backouts in the US? If there's blackout, just the car charger.

But how would I be able to use this if I don't have a landline?

I have a Motorolla RAZR affair and it's annoying to use for long periods of time.

Outside of the black out issue, I think of landlines not at all. When I moved into this recently renovated apt, I never got one installed.

I keep the cell phone bill down by making most of my calls within the house from one of the internet telephone services, Skype. US & Canada calls cost only 15/year, hard to beat.

I only use the cell when I'm not near my computer, say elsewhere in the house or out & about. It also remains my number for incoming calls. But when I get my next cell plan, I'll get a much smaller one.

Every month or so for me. Computer's on the UPS, critical services in the house run on the generator. Car charger's a good call though.

I like the landline as I prefer the formfactor of a normal phone and I get better clarity that way.

They attach to cellular telephones, so I'd imagine one could be rigged for your automobile.

House landline belongs to the last century. Think, Windows 3.1

I have one. I use it for long distance. Plus, it's annoying to talk on cell for extended periods of time so I have a landline, although I didn't have one for a couple years at my last apartment.

And lastly, the office really doesn't like those 1-900 #s on my cell phone bill.

I have not had a land line (minus at work) for over 8 years. I see no problem if you have a good network and a nationwide plan.

I wish my cellphone coverage was better in the house. As soon as I go outside the bars go up, it must be something in the structure of the home interfering with the signal as it has happened with 3 different phones. I'd love to get rid of a landline if I could count on the cell phone to make reliable business calls.

Does anyone that has Cingular know if the newer 3G technology makes a difference in indoors reception?
