Is the shirt and tie the same colour?

not exactly, but they are similar. I was hoping the stripes in the shirt and the tie would create enough contrast

On its own, the combo doesn't look good. But it might look better if worn with a solid navy suit.

what would you recommend?

I plan on wearing the shirt with grey pants

I say when dealing with similar colours, it is better for the tie to be a few shades darker. As the purple is the dominant colour for the tie, the stripes isn't really going to help that much.

Oh shit... that tie was camouflaging like crazy. I thought it a weird patterned shirt.

Felt like I was look at:

Would look better with a solid tie.

no but the first one here is the best of the lot. Do yourself a favor and just get a solid navy tie to go with that shirt.

People need to learn boring before they can advance to stripes on stripes.

Agreed, go with a solid color tie

I'd rather go with a burgundy. But now that you mention it, OP probably doesn't have a navy tie yet. If don't have a navy tie, go buy a navy. They are great for lazy days anyway.

I think I'm gonna go with a knit solid navy.

I thought about wearing a burgundy. These are the only two I have, and I'm quite sure either one would go.
