Flying to Manhattan Saturday 6/16 Need Help to Find my Wedding Suit!

Hi All!

I'm a Chicago man getting married in 3 months...yay!

I'm flying in to Manhattan this Saturday June 16th just for the day to purchase my wedding suit as well as an additional suit. I need some guidance as to efficiently visit as many shops/boutiques as possible within the day.

Here is what I'm looking for:

-2 Suits. I'm ditching the tux in favor of a tailored Charcoal suit. Hoping to spend no more than $700 per suit.

-2 well fitting dress shirts

-A great pair of dark brown leather dress shoes for about $200


Other Notes:
-I have an appointment with Suit Supply @ 11am...I'm hoping to score 2 suits from them but I need other options.
-I've been to Century 21 and I've seen some killer dress shoes at great prices. Good idea?
-I'm 6ft 175lbs and I typically wear a 38R with a waist of 31

 

I don't wanna bank totally on Suit Supply so if anyone as any other suit and shirting shops I can check out PLEASE let me know!

First, I suggest you shift money from suits to shoes. Suit Supply is mostly well under $700 - use the savings there to step up to more than $200 for shoes.

Well, if your budget for shoes are just $200, then you can probably only get Allen Edmonds on sale. I believe they're actually on sale now at Bloomies, so I'd check that out.

 

On the other hand, if you can step up on the shoe budget like unbelragazzo said, then check out C&J, they're having a sale right now as well, and can probably be had for ~$400.

I've read through all the pages in the "Suit Supply" topic which leads to me believe I may or may not be certain to find what I'm looking for at Suit Supply.

 

What the being said my MAIN concern is for someone to help list off some stores I can visit for the day in Manhattan. I'm flying in strictly to suit/shirt shop so any other great suiting options you can provide for under $1000 would help me the most.

Presumably you want shops that are only in NYC and not Chicago, since you can visit Chicago at any time? Even if you can't find what you want at Suit Supply, I think you'd be better off searching for suits a couple hundred under $700 and spending a couple hundred more on shoes.

Hmm.. If you're flying to Manhattan just to pick up a suit I assume money isn't an issue? The problem with flying for the day is that you probably won't walk away with anything, as most suits need to be tailored because off-the-rack sizing is standardized. Gucci, and most designers tailor your suit at no extra cost, and it will take around 3 weeks.. The suits generally range in the 2k< price range.. Your best bet would be to walk up 5th Ave.. Saks, Armani, Gucci, Prada, Yves Saint Laurent, Louis Vuitton, Burberry, and Bergdorf Goodman are all lined up for you. One avenue over on Madison (continuing after central park) and you have Barneys, Hermes, Dolce & Gabbana, and Tom Ford. Brioni, Turnbull & Asser, and Paul Stuart are all floating around in the general midtown area as well.. If you try on a lot of suits you may find one that fits your body perfectly without having to be tailored.

^pretty much all of these are in Chicago too, no? Also, OP states that money is an issue - he's looking to spend less than $700/suit, so pretty much none of the places you mentioned.

I really appreciate everyone's help a lot. Believe it not I found a round-trip ticket for $200 so I figured the cost is minimal if I'm able to head to a city with a larger selection of suiting options than Chicago. Part of trip is indeed the novelty I will admit however I would not purchase a $200 ticket to NYC to only spend ~$600. I will end up budgeting closer to $1500 the more I think about it.

 

Perhaps my expectations are much higher than my budget? All my suits have to be tailored anyway so I fully understand I wont be able to find a "perfect" fitting suit directly off the rack especially for under $2K. I apologize as my original post was probably either misleading or I am simply just uninformed.

 

In my head I was hoping to find my personal sweet spot of suiting options between the $500 and $1000 mark. True no suit will be perfect initially so I indeed plan to have whatever suit I purchased tailored. I guess my agenda was to visit stores in NYC that I would not normally find in Chicago....like Suit Supply.
 

At any case I will certainly visit the stores on 5th Ave. (the stores not found in Chicago) and I'm sure I will find some suiting options as a great starting point. And...I will BE SURE to put aside extra for my shoes! This is why I like coming to this forum.

+1 on Paul Stuart. Their sale started on Tuesday. I was in there today, and while I didn't look at suits there were a bunch of sportcoats for 30-50% off. Of course you also have Paul Stuart in Chicago but their NYC store is definitely one of my faves. SuitSupply of course is a great option too. I have one of their linen/silk SCs that I think is a great value.

You may be able to buy something, have the tailor take your measurements, and then have it shipped to you. That way, you also avoid the sales tax, assuming there is no equivalent store in your state, or if your state does not charge sales tax on clothes. Otherwise, forgo the free pant hem and sleeve length adjustment, and just get everything done through a local tailor. Those are the easiest things to adjust anyway, and most places will end up charging you for more extensive tailoring.

Thanks a bunch gentlemen, I super pumped! I land at 9am and I fly back at Midnight.

 

After 15 hours I'm pretty sure I will be dead.

Jeez, good luck with that and congrats on the wedding. Hope you find what you're looking for - let me know how Suit Supply is, haven't seen their stuff yet.
