First and foremost credit to this write up goes to kgmessier whose MTO post I used as a template. I recently talked with Alden DC about their run for the fall and how at the beginning of each season they put in their order for the next coming season. Joe at DC told me that Kathy would probably be keen on the idea of a MTO group order for the next summer run and I feel it would be a great opportunity for the community to get together and create a boot of our own design. Seeing as how Fall is at the point of being close, yet not too close we may be at the right time to collaborate and narrow down a design of our choosing. Though of course we will have to work with Kathy on what can and cannot be done. So, the purpose of this thread is to narrow down who has a serious interest in purchasing a MTO group order, and to see if that number is enough to convince the retailer and Alden itself.

We can start with suggestions for a number of styles and from there narrow down to a final idea. Obviously this will take a few days/weeks but I’m sure we can all agree on a design. I think the best course of action would be to narrow it down to two designs and submit both to Kathy and see which one would be the best for her. As soon as we come to a conclusive idea on a single makeup people would then be able to opt in or out. Only opt in if you are serious about committing to a purchase. I cannot go to Kathy and tell her that we have 12 people in to purchase and then only ending up selling 4 pairs. That isn't fair to her, and to those who spent work not only formulating the design but those actually making the boot for us. Feel free to PM me and to submit to this thread for discussion.

As it stands Kathy is currently out of the store for a week or two so we won’t have any firm answers on what is or isn’t possible. I have talked to the others that work at the shop though and they seem enthusiastic on doing this, and helping us along the way. Of course final say on a design rests with Kathy but for the time being the information given to us by the others at the shop is what we have to work on. That being said, here is some info on what could be some possible options for next summer. None of this is set in stone, this is just the information I was given by Alden DC. Feel free to discuss other possibilities and I can pass them on to Kathy when she is back from her vacation.

Shell:

#4 (Sounded over the phone as if this would be a viable option)

Whiskey (may be unavailable, though I asked them to check if summer 2013 would be possible)

Ravello (same boat as Whiskey, if not more difficult)

Cigar (Probably the easiest to do at the moment as far as rare colors go)

Lasts:

Barrie (the easiest and most viable option)

Grant (similar in capability to the Barrie, as DC has done many shoes on the Grant)

Leydon (may be a bit of a stretch, though it could be possible. Doubtful though, as I was told DC has never done a boot on this Last.)

So, let the discussion begin!

okay, ill kick off with a proposal to do the following makeup

- cigar shell boot
- antique edges
- perforated cap toe
- barrie or leydon last
- speedhooks
- commando soles or double leather
- 360 or closed heel (I havent figured out myself yet

in the end it would look rather similar to this one

#4 captoe with double waterlock sole, grant last

This is my #1 makeup at this start point. I was told that a cap toe would be the easiest for them to order, and seeing one on #4 would be stunning. The two makeups we should build should obviously vary. I think if we have one in #4 then the natural progression would be to have another in a separate color (though I doubt that needed explaining.) At the end of this week when we have a few more posts and ideas I'll tally up the most popular and hold a vote to see what makeups we want to work with, tweak, etc. I'm thinking we can narrow it down to four at the end of this week, and then I can bring those designs to Kathy. From there we can see what works and what doesn't. After that we can again narrow down to our final 2 choices and I'll bring those designs to the retailer for further scrutiny.

I would definitely be down for this #4 wingtip boot on either grant or plaza last.

How about the following:

Cigar Tanker Boot on Grant Last
Grant Last
Antique Edge trim
All eyelet
360 flat welt
commando or waterlock sole

Count me as likely in on this.l I would be down for anything in #4 on the grant last, though captoe and wingtip would be my preference. I'd also prefer to avoid a commando sole.

I've love a ravello wingtip boot on the Plaza, and have mentioned it to Kathy in the past, but it didn't seem like a possibility.

Also, this may be a boring idea to some people, but I would love a black calf wingtip boot on the Plaza last. Just a thought for a second makeup, and it's one that could possibly get done.

If this thread results in something on the Barrie or Leydon, I'd be less inclined to be in on it (hence I said tentatively in).

Will this be a US only thing, or are foreigners allowed?

Where are you located?

Edit: I just got off the phone with Alden DC to check your query (and others who are outside the states) and they said it would most likely be a non-issue to ship internationally.

My understanding from Mike at Epaulet (after a visit to the Alden factory) is that ravello is non-existent at this point and the wait might be up to two years. We have a MTO order in the mix for a ravello "Obscura" boot that we might not see until 2014. So it may make sense to stick with #4 and cigar if that is something Kathy thinks she can more readily get a hold of.
