Today:

1. Big Back Forty, Count to Ten
2. Jesus and Mary Chain, Sometimes Always
3. Placebo and David Bowie, Without You I'm Nothing
4. Big Back Forty, Just What I Need
5. Roxy Music, Dance Away
6. Johnny Thunders, I Only Wrote This Song for You
7. Smashing Pumpkins, Annie Dog
8. Roxy Music, Love Is the Drug
9. Kill Hannah, They Can't Save Us Now
10. Smashing Pumpkins, Perfect

I drastically pruned my current playlist, so there's more artist duplication on this list. Kind of a fluke in the case of Roxy Music and Big Back Forty, as I don't have *that* much Roxy Music, and Big Back Forty only put out one album. I do have a fuckton of Smashing Pumpkins, though.

Too bad, man - hope it wasn't anything serious. The gig was a hell of a lot of fun, and the new songs really stood out, in part because more people knew them (and I'm def not some OG Thermals fan or anything) and sang along, and in part because they're really remarkable tunes and represent a true progression. Of course, with the exception of a handful of those new songs, they basically have one and a half speeds - fast and slightly faster - so the pacing wore you down a little. Two other (very minor) issues: the touring guitarist limped out on crutches and had to play sitting down, which sort of toned down the rawk factor (to his credit, though, he still turned in a pretty high-energy performance); and they closed with an incredible one-two punch of "Pillar of Salt" and "Returning to the Fold", which had everyone singing along and would have been a perfect coda, but then they came back out and blasted through two sort of sound-alike older numbers for the encore which weren't nearly as powerful.

Still, a fantastic, high-energy show, all in all; I would pay twice as much to see them again, and I'm even more certain now that TBTBTM was the best record of 2006. Anyone in FL, AL, TN, MO, IN or OH, they doing a run of shows with the Hold Steady beginning next week, which will be the most rockinest bill you'll see this year.

Sorry, I ramble and I'm boring - now back to your regulary scheduled randomness...

Someone who knows stats better than me could probably explain how this is an entirely possible "random" outcome...otoh, I sometimes wonder if iPod adjust randsom based on your listening patterns; not sure how this would work, though...

I Hung My Head - Johnny Cash
Why Don't We Do It in the Road - The Beatles

I'm pleased beyond description to see the Replacements on multiple lists. Who would have thought Tommy Stinson would go on to work with Diddy and Axl?

If you like the Replacements and you haven't checked out Stinson's bands, Bash and Pop, and Perfect, you're missing out.

I saw Bash and Pop in the parking lot of the University of South Dakota Business School, headlining the annual free "Rockfest" concert. Tommy Stinson was fucked up out of his gourd, and I got to listen to Midwestern sorority girls complaining that they'd never heard of these people.

I'll be picking up a copy of B&P's sole, long out-of-print album at some point in the very near future (my CD collection was stolen a while back and I'm just now rebuilding). When I do, I'll be happy to send along a copy if you like.

BTW, I lived in Morwell for about a year in the early 80s.
