Corvette is way cheaper to insure for me then a Trans Am. The Trans Am was cheaper to insure then my Acura. By what the old men buy not us young guys.

Wow thanks for the advice everyone. I've been camping the last few days trying to forget that I have to buy a fucking car now.

It sounds like the consensus is to go CPO at a dealership rather than risking it through Craigslist. I'm thinking the same way, especially since Craigslist pricing doesn't seem to be that much of a discount compared to the dealership.

It looks like getting a G35 for $20,000 or less is not going to be possible. I'm considering maybe a used Lexus IS.

A lot of people here are going to try and sell you on a BMW; however, I agree that the G35 may be a good choice. I assume that you plan on driving it into the ground like your last car. With that said, the G will have a much lower total cost of ownership. I bought an 04 G35 off of lease and am still driving it today with 145k with no major problems so far. Prior to that I had an A4 that cost me a fortune to maintain. With that being said, if you were looking to lease a new car every few years then yeah, German would be the way to go.

We had an IS350 as a loaner when my wife's RX was in for maint. I really wanted to like the IS, but it was so underwhelming.

The IS felt slow and soft for what is so post to be a sporty sedan... My biggest complaint is lack of room for the rear seats.

+1... I am currently looking for a Van to live in. No student loans for me. I want to be debt free with a healthy savings by the time I graduate college and move to NYC. I like this OP, hes got a good head on him.

That is some next-level shit right there. Don't give up on the plan.

Several years ago there was an article in the Raleigh (NC) News & Observer about a Duke student who was stealth camping in a van on campus. Interesting stuff, and I admire that spirit. There is value in refusing to conform to the herd.

My understanding is the "sweet spot" for used cars is for a 3 year old, pre-leased CPO. Leased cars have stringent maintenance requirements and mileage upcharges, so on average they're in better shape with lower miles than truly pre-owned cars. 3 years old means the biggest whack at depreciation is out of the way (the day the car was driven off the lot new it loses about 25 - 33% of its value), and any manufacturing flaws are likely to have shown up already, but maintenance costs should stay low for at least the first few years.

Not that much depreciation. One of my cars has only depreciated 33% over 6 years and the other depreciates 15-20% over three years.

Haha thanks. I'm an only child, so people automatically assume I was spoiled. Then they see my car, my apartment, my clothes, and realize that I'm just a bum hoarding cash. Having assholes for parents wasn't exactly "fun" and probably cost me a lot more than I care to think about, but it did teach me the value of a dollar and the (lack of value) in materialistic bullshit. Even still, living in a van is fucking hardcore man.

Another tangent: Is it just me or have Range Rovers become incredibly popular? That and Audis. They're all over Dallas. Are Range Rover and Audi about to steal some lucrative douchebag market share from the BMW 3 series?? This makes me sad, like watching Apple finally overtake PC or Sony yielding to Samsung.
