Guys,

I just returned from the local Alden dealer where I tried on and ordered my first pair of shell cordovan shoes. I was torn between the
back bal oxford captoe and the black bal medallion tip shoes. After trying both on, I decided on the latter.

Here is a link to the calf version, since I couldn't locate a shell version on the shoemart webpage:

http://www.theshoemart.com/alden-me...sdl-909_ald_m_medallion_tip_bal_calfskin.html

Since the medallion tip bal in shell wasn't in the dealer's alden catalog, he stated that he would call Alden on Monday to place the order and warned me that it could be 12-14 weeks for the special order and would likely need to be made. I put a 50% deposit down and he told me that he would call me on Monday with further details.

After searching the Alden website, these appear to only be offered in calf. Does anyone know if I will be able to get these in black shell? Would this be special order item? If so, do you think that it will cost more than the $620-$700 quote the dealer gave me this morning?

Thanks for any guidance you can offer. I'm looking forward to owning my first pair of shell shoes:)

This is my first pair of Alden shoes. I wear suits everyday and work in healthcare. I selected black as they can be worn with my blue and charcoal suits very well and aren't too flashy (the wingtips are awesome, I'm just not sure if they will be too flashy).

I'm open to suggestions- can you recommend another shell shoe (in black) that would meet my needs? Other shoes in my wardrobe include plain toe oxfords, captoe oxfords, black loafers- all purchased before discovering StyleForum and thus Cole Haan:(

Thanks for any advice you can offer,
Fred

In general, black shell is the 'black sheep' of the family. Also, those that wear Alden lean towards casual, hence the blucher preference. Although their balmoral shoes are nice, I do agree that their casual wear is their strength, especially with shell cordovan.

This shoe may be a start and you will find out what your preferences will be soon after.
