ah. those were the two i had read about but couldnt remember. what if both of those are replaced?

the case is the problem

there is a repair that machines the case, but simple replacement won't cut it, once they fail the likelyhood of it happening again is increased becasue the case is likely damaged

 

the newer cars aren't affected, don't know when the changes were made

this is great info. thanks a million on this. looks like id need to factor that in. in all honesty, that jag is really looking fucking good right now. the porsche was so much fun, but the comfort on the jag won me over

Porsche or the Jag engine? RMS, IMS? Damn acronyms, I miss simple old ass carbs, none of that fancy ABS bull shit traction control... Probably something you can't work on you self, have to take it to the dealer/specialty shop?

theres a few good shops here. i could do the basic stuff myself...(oil changes, brakes, etc) but still prob feel more comfortable paying to have it done by someone whos done it before wink.gif

cars now are so much more complex.

Porsche

IMS = intermediate shaft, like a balance shaft or for power take off, oil pump, etc.

changes were made for 987.2 ... like i mentioned in my FIRST post in this thread...
i wouldnt touch a coxster unless its 987.2 or newer

the RMS and IMS issues have been significantly overblown by the Internets. it seems like people think that these two things are ticking time bombs that will eventually blow your engine sky high, it's just a matter of when.

in reality only a small percentage of cars seem to have this problem - it's just that the failures are reported and spread like wildfire across the car fora. if you buy a Boxster, just make sure you have a full prepurchase inspection done and get a car that has full records.

an RMS problem isn't even a showstopper as long as it was diagnosed and fixed. and it's not like your oil suddenly all goes - it's more like a very slow seepage that may leave a drip or two on your garage floor...so it's easy to detect and really doesnt hurt your car as long as you keep the oil levels where they should be. as far as the IMS goes, you can get an upgrade for it that will significantly improve its durability, after you take delivery (or buy a car with the upgrade already performed)

its like HIV or cancer... silent killer

RMS - sure its a matter of annoyance (euphemism?) , but how many times people fix it with brand new parts at porsche dealers or legitimate porsche specialist shops and it leaks again the next day/

both are significant engine design issues... that new models (or at least newer) fixed

that's why you install the IMS upgrade and then you have reasonable peace of mind. sure, it's always better to buy newer and even better to buy CPO, but in case OP can only buy an older one, these problems, even out of warranty, are not the showstopper that you are making them out to be.

how is that economically efficient and effective man...
you buy used for say $15k, then you spend $3-5k on getting your IMS and RMS serviced along with some other random stuff you probably need to fix the older car
why not just save a bit longer and get something that you can rely on day in and day out...
i mean a coxster is not a 993 thats collector worthy - so you can spend a load of dough fixing it up and have something thats a true porsche 911...

IDK about $15,000 for an early model, but I seen them as little as $7,000-12,000. Depending on miles and overall condition. I get what HRoi saying, Internet tends to blow shit out of proportion and forums are generally full of the negative. But those negatives are something a buyer should be aware of and how much those repair/fixes are and the buyers mechanical ability. Of course budget and desire to own car is consideration... The Porsche Boxster is a cool little car and will probably have a small following in 20-30 years. Like the Spitfires, Midgets, other small roadsters. Yes the bigger TR's, MG A/B, is more sought after but there little siblings still have there niche and keep the market alive. With that said, based on looks and price. I would probably go with a Boxster and still have plenty of fun in the car.

i mean... if someone buys a $7000 PORSCHE convertible and gets a blown engine... they better see that shit coming because... thats why its $7000 ...
its like maseratis are $35000 used... and people dont buy them? why? because if you cant go to your local gas station to repair a MAZ can you?
if you go to the dealer... i dont think you can come out for less than a couple large ones... and i think its like $2/mile driven average in terms of repairs?

used exotics are great if you can get lucky... its retarded if you picked a bad fruit
