OK, so mostly odd jackets and the like instead of suits? In that case, knits will work nicely. Generally ties with a little more texture will be good. Repp stripe ties are also classic for classroom wear.

I would stay away. They are $15, but you can find a really nice tie for a deal on ebay for $20... So save your money and get real ties that you don't have to replace in the future when they fall apart. And yes, I speak from experience with tiebar ties.

If you're a teacher, you might as well wear knits, repp ties, and wool with tweeds and corduroys. Wear this clothing in loden and brown type colors until it becomes a bit shabby and you'll look great.

A generally good indicator of quality is a 100% wool interlining and a hand-sewn slip stitch; these will help the tie keep its shape. The Permanent Style blog and Hober both have good posts on tie construction so you can visualize this.

You can find good quality ties at discount at the Rack (2nd the rec for Faconnable and Talbott) and Last Call; ehaberdasher is also great.

Two related questions;

1) Could someone please please post some pictures of woven vs printed ties?
Im unsure if i can actually see the difference.

2) Should ties used in the evening/at night be darker? IE navy, black etc?
During the day i use alot of lighter colors( light blue, orange, mid blue, green) but they feel a bit flashy in the evening.

I agree with some of the other posts. I have many patterned ties but I finds that I reach for the solids most. I wear solid blue and black ties the most often. Sadly, solid ties in the colors you want are often the most difficult to find at a department store, especially if you are concerned about quality. I will have new solids in spring/summer colors coming in this weekend and I can vouch for the quality.

Maybe it should also be mentioned that focus be spent on checking how the ties knot. As you might know, SF is obsessed with dimples on ties. Only recently have I observed that only about half the ties I have make a proper knot. For shame... :plain:

Secondly, wait until you know what type of ties fit your style before spending a lot of money...
