Question about work experience: Do you generally pull stuff directly from your resume or provide a more general description?

My resume has overall responsibilities and then bullets for achievements (i.e. increased x sales by 10%, reduce x day process to y days, etc.)

I put the overall description into the field as I thought revealing the bullets might be too much disclosure for the general public.

Good point. I didn't bother with a general description on my resume as in IT that's implied by job title. I just put achievements where I went above and beyond or added value. I guess i'll have to figure something out for my linkedin profile.

Does anyone recommend putting a picture up in your linked-in profile? I wouldn't put one on my resume...

Yes. It's like online dating: you know that people are going to judge you by your pic, so why not? If a picture says a thousand words about you, and says them in an INSTANT, what do you want someone to think of you - even before they read about all your achievements.

Of course, the secret is not to use just any old picture (no grad pics, wedding pics, or you as a 'Simpson'). Put some effort into it, or stage-manage your picture. You want to quickly communicate that you're fit to be the guy in charge... optimistic... heroic. Search Youssef Karsh's pictures of JFK, for inspiration.

Back when I was dating, I got my brother to snap a picture of me driving a powerboat. It is a great pic: shades, the wind in my hair, a calm smile and confident grip on the wheel... with sea, sun and waves in the background. I got all kinds of women from that picture, despite NEVER bringing any of them to actually experience that particular scene.

People will see what they want to see. Why wouldn't you want to control that?

One of LinkedIn's most interesting feature is the ability to see who has viewed your profile. But without a standard to check your profile views with, I find it hard to gauge what's normal. Also, it's clear that not everyone uses LinkedIn the same. There are those who have only created a profile because they heard it was a 'smart' thing to do but have not visited the website since. Other users seem to use it like they would Facebook (posting links, commenting, building an online brand, social outreach, etc). How do you all use LinkedIn? And on average, how many views does your profile receive on a given week?
