Pinstripe suit...navy or charcoal

I am in the process of getting my third custom suit made and after getting a solid navy and light gray suit I figure I should move on to pinstripes. Unfortunately I can decide on the color. The options are navy or charcoal? I'm thinking of getting it as a three piece suit as well.

So I'm reaching out to SF for y'alls opinion...navy or charcoal?

In terms of your collection, charcoal may be better; although I prefer navy striped over charcoal striped

Have you considered charcoal flannel before moving onto stripes?

You have to wear it so your call. There are no objective tests which can determine the choice. Or are you thinking of a poll to determine your wardrobe? That would be a crazy idea.

Navy is better for pinstripes. Charcoal pinstripes is sort of somber, paradoxically.

Make sure you have the solids first, right?

But pinstripes are coming back.

Charcoal flannel? Wouldn't that be too warm for summer?

I currently have the solids already (Navy and Medium Grey). Thank you for your opinion.

I like charcoal pinstripes. For wide stripes, I would go for navy though.

Depends on your needs and where you are wearing these suits. I would do a medium grey sharkskin next so you have light grey, medium grey and navy suits. Then I would add a charcoal grey nailhead/birdseye. Then a stripe. Decide how pronounced you want the stripe to be, how far apart and how wide each stripe is and how much contrast you can handle for your workplace. I like the contrast of a silvery stripe against navy more than silver on grey but both have their place. You also have a choice of beaded, rope, pinstripe and chalk for the style of stripe. Most important is picking suits that work in the context they are worn.

In my scenario you will have light, medium and dark grey suits in 3 different textures and finishes, a solid navy and then add a navy stripe and you have a diverse basic wardrobe and something appropriate for any occasion.
The downside of this wardrobe is your closet looks like a paint sample card, light to dark, and if you rotate thru your suits every week you have very diverse looks. Best is to analyze your needs and pick your suits. If a navy pinstripe would only get worn once a month, get something more practical.

I wouldn't go pinstripe on a third suit, especially if this rotation is going to see a lot of wear. Build the basic collection first. If you've got navy and light grey, get medium grey and plain charcoal (in whichever order you choose, though charcoal is probably more versatile). And strongly consider re-acquiring these colors across the spectrum of seasonal weights, as CD advises. (Though your mileage may vary, especially if you live in a climate without a lot of seasonal shifts).

 

When it comes time for stripes, I concur with most of the posters on this thread. Navy is a sharper look.
