so there's a difference between an well-lit subject and correctly lit subject in terms of photographic lighting. If you look at MoL's pics, the "dramatic" effect is created by the shadows, not necessarily by the areas that are lit well. It's not that complicated though, if you have good light to work with. In the above pics, I guess all of MoL's subjects are laid on a flat table next to a windows. Windows light is considered extremely good for photography.
Indeed, natural sunlight is the best.
I can't help but notice this slight outer circular burn on MOL's pics. I am not sure if that is something a lens can create, but i would guess there is some post production tidbits in play. I am a graphics nerd, so every time i see something i think to myself, " how would i recreate that?"...
