Whoever said that a blazer and flannels was inherently informal? Sure, it is if you've got a polo shirt underneath and aren't wearing socks but put a French cuffed shirt, silk tie and pocket square into the ensemble and you have something appropriate to wear to the opera in the summer time. So no, holding up your flannels with suspenders is not a 'clash of formalities'. Given some of the suspenders I've seen for sale at Thurston's, I'd say it would be waggish, droll even.
