Calvin Candie, Master of Candie Land.
Tarantino making a flamboyant southern dandy was quite a treat. I grew up in the south and the higher class southern accents are pretty rare. I've listened to older recordings of my grandmother from the 70's and she had one. Candie's swank with that accent was special. I don't think his higher class southern accent was perfect, but with the camp of the movie, it worked for me.
Evil characters who are charming are always fun, but I've never seen it done this well.
The costumes were great, all burgundy and gold. With the candlelight, his hair and skin even looked gold. His "big house" fit the character perfectly with it's over the top decadence. I've read that the blood on his hand was real. He hurt himself when he slammed his hand down on the table and just went with it. I read that before seeing the movie, so seeing him smear his blood on Broomhilda was genuinely shocking.
Really, the most enjoyable performance I've seen in years.Edited by Reggs - 1/14/13 at 4:13am
