Thesis title: "One at a Time: a Lacanian Perspective on Chronographical Lower-Appendage Garments in the Novels of Chandler." ...? ;)

I'm a huge fan of the film and story, and had spent quite some time trying to duplicate the outfit described in one section ("I was clean shaven and sober, and didn't care who knew it . . .") without any success finding "clock" socks. I was able to put together the entire rest of the ensemble years ago, down to the fedora. Eventually I discovered that this is an American spelling of "cloques" - Webster online - a fabric with an embossed design, especially pique with small woven figures. So any repeating pattern of small figures, medallions or whatever, would qualify. My family has even spent time trying to find some to give me as a gift. I'm going to research the pictures shown here, so maybe I can finally get some. ;)
