Wearing a black pinstriped suit...

I wouldn't wear pinstripes to a funeral.

The reason that the statement "I wouldn't wear pinstripes to a funeral" was made in reference to that suit is that black suits are generally acceptable at funerals. There is pretty much no other occasion in which a black suit would be appropriate.

So when you asked if that fabric would be "acceptable to wear it on occasions that one might ordinarily wear a black suit" - it was assumed that the "occasions" that you speak of would be limited to funerals.

Care to expand on any other occasions that might call for a black suit? Then we can speak to whether that fabric would work for those occasions.

Charcoal would be sufficient for both, while navy may be a bit more formal than charcoal. Of course, if the more formal wedding states "black tie" then you would need to wear a tux.

A black suit would not really be appropriate for either (although it may be acceptable to those who do not pay such close attention to clothing standards).

I've seen posted on here before, and it makes quite a bit of sense, that you shouldn't have a black suit in your closet unless you are a funeral director or can otherwise financially justify wearing it only to funerals.

Many of us grew up with our mothers telling us that a black suit is a staple. And we are now all old enough to understand that she can occasionally be wrong.
