Hi - I'm new and need help

Here is my situation - I'm just finishing my first year of law school and starting an internship for the summer, with a judge. I have two suits now a dark grey and a pinstriped navy. I need to buy about five more this weekend. I have a good taylor who sells nice semi-custom (terminology?) suits for around 800-1000 each who I plan to go to. But I'm not sure about what colors or patterns I'll need.

Also, I like the idea of at least one brown, maybe a price of whales plaid in brown - But I'm afraid it will fall out of style and these have to get me through the next 2 years at least.

Any/all advice is appreciated.

Are either of your other suits from this tailor? If not, it would be dumb to purchase 5 suits from him at once. Purchase 1, and when it comes back, make changes to the next you purchase. Once you get the perfect fitting suit, order as many as you want.

In terms of patterns and colors, here's my list of what you need, in a very particular order:
1. Solid Navy
2. Another solid grey (I'm not sure if your current grey is charcoal. If it is, go medium grey here. If it isn't, go charcoal here)
3. Tan (you'll be doing most of your work in the summer for the next couple of years, so its a good option)

Outside of these 3 options, you can start playing with colors and patterns, although I'd stay in shades of grey for now. You may look into having a couple of sportcoats and trousers made in place of the last 2 suits - maybe a navy blazer and your brown POW pattern that you want for coats, and a medium grey and charcoal pair of trousers.

Oh, and where are you digging up ~$5,000 for suits in your first year of law school? Dealing in black-market meds for ADHD?

But you will have to go to a fish market in Tokyo.
The Prince of Wales plaid is a classic. I wouldn't worry about it going out of style. You might want to consider solid navy, charcoal, a mid-gray and perhaps something with a subtle window pane pattern.
By semi-custom, I believe you are referring to made to measure (MTM).

1. Listen to the advice not to get 5 suits at once. Get one. Three suits is plenty for a while. In case you didn't know this already, you want to be dry cleaning these suits like once or twice a year, not every other time you wear them.

2. Given that you've already got a stripe, for the third suit I'd probably choose a solid. Like a solid navy.

3. If you want to get more suits, look around the first few weeks on the job and see what other people are wearing. If there are no other brown suits, probably skip the brown suit.

Yes, if you are getting your first MTM with this tailor, probably best to start with just one suit so you can tweak the fit on subsequent orders and start with a solid navy.

If you're not comfortable with playing around patterns, play it safe first with solid suits.

Great advice. My other suits are from the same taylor and I'm very happy with them. I'm new but Ill try and help out someone else when I can.

I guess you want advice on some clothing related topics, but you are a hypersensitive prick on others. Perhaps you should be more specific about the topics on which you are willing to accept help in the future.

You guys are angry. Folding tees at Hollister must be stressful.

Oh well back to the real world - studying and getting ready for a real job - you know the kind where I work and have responsibilities but not time to time to post 1300 times on some forum, or write on my blog, or take pics of myself in my suit for everyone to discuss. I know, I'm wrong and your all real successful - probably all senior partners at some white shoe firm - but you also think 5K for some clothes is somehow remarkable and have time to post on here continuously during working hours. Ya OK.

But anyway thanks for the ideas about suit colors.
