What is everyone's thoughts on jackets with collar tabs? I don't recall ever seeing them up until the last couple of years and was wondering if there's any historical precedence for them prior to now (on blazers and suit jackets)
It is a functional feature on old country jackets, where the wearer would put up the collar for protection from weather. There should be a matching button underneath the other side of the collar.

Yup. The notch collar was originally designed to allow the throat to close in wind and rain. Some jackets with the tab will still have the button underneath, which means you can still use it. Usually decorative, but when caught in wind and rain, it can be nice. I've certainly found myself flipping collars up when caught by surprise in the rain before. With a throat tab, that's even more effective.

It's a cool feature of the coats, decorative but ups the cool factor nonetheless.
Here in the UK in sartorial circles it's considered to be "trying to hard" and therefore in poor taste. It is however perfectly acceptable in all it's iterations in countrywear.
